Office Hours with Arthur Brooks

by Arthur Brooks

Hi Friends, I’m Arthur Brooks, a social scientist, Vanderbilt professor, and columnist at The Free Press. I write, speak, and teach about the science of human happiness, blending neuroscience, behavioral science, philosophy, and religion for insights on how to live better and be happier. Each week on Office Hours, you’ll get a glimpse into the research on happiness and explore how to use it to improve your life—and share what you learn with those you love. Join me in the movement to build a happier world–starting with you. Production by penname.co. Photography by www.calebhargett.com.

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

Prof Arthur Brooks has a remarkable ability to make the science of happiness feel deeply personal, practical and intellectually compelling!

Marceteran · Sep 2026

I’ve been following Arthur Brooks for a while now and have been a listener since close to the launch of his podcast. I always find the information and protocols he shares to be very helpful. I share this podcast with my adult kids and my husband often because there are great nuggets packed into each episode. Arthur is so likable and I enjoy his speaking style and cadence. Give it a listen!

AndiPack · Sep 2026

Taking advice from this podcast has truly increased my happiness in daily life. Dr Brooks presents practical, research-based strategies for living and spreading happiness. His tone is wonderful- approachable, expert, human. However, I’m disappointed by the monetization choices that undermine his message. For example, his series based on his new book, The Meaning of Life, boils down to- don’t look to complicated tech (like AI) for answers to complex questions (like the meaning of life). The same day i listened to that episode, I also received his weekly email asking me to pay for his app- in which AI uses his voice to answer questions about the meaning of life. What?? Dr Brooks definitely comes across as a person of great integrity, which makes the disconnect between his message and his products extremely jarring.

It took me a while to find you, Arthur Brooks, but maybe the timing is perfect. Recently retired after 40 years as a nurse, and recently marrying off my 2 sons (all good and wonderfully satisfying!) yet I was feeling an array of emotions, mostly joyless. Your podcast has single-handedly given me hope and focus in finding my joy again. Thank you 🙏
