Love the show. Have listened to tons of episodes. But there's a lot of microphone clunking noise. I don't know if their hands keep bumping their microphones while they talk or if they're wearing their mics on the shirt or something but once you notice it it starts to drive you crazy. It's more likely to happen when you hear Paul or Mike getting animated or when they start handing off the conversation to the other host. Please work on it. Again, love the show!
Scott Bessent and Peter Thiel appear to misunderstand how safety engineering works in complex technology systems. Anthropic is not dictating the terms of US national security. Anthropic is a vendor that produces a potentially hazardous technology. The company conducts safety analysis to identify hazards and implement safety controls. The safety analysis has identified several well-known risks associated with AI, including: lethal autonomous weapons without human supervision, control, or override; and large-scale government surveillance of its own citizens. Anthropic has implemented safety controls designed to preclude these hazardous scenarios. This is standard safety practice. The company similarly rejects assistance related to bioterrorism. None of this dictates national security policy. Vendors impose safety constraints on their products. This is not policymaking. It is responsible system design. If the government prefers a system with fewer safeguards, it is free to choose a different vendor. The argument that AI systems must support “all lawful uses” misunderstands system safety controls in engineering. Safety controls are implemented based on hazard analysis, not legal mandates. For example, there is no law requiring that a “deadman-switch” be included in a human centrifuge used for G-Force training. But, this control is needed to prevent fatalities. It is not a matter of lawfulness; it is a matter of necessary controls to preclude harm. Finally, in the absence of mature AI standards, responsible vendors are implementing internal safety programs. This is standard safety practice, not an attempt to dictate national policy. Thank you for your outstanding coverage of important topics in AI. I recommend this podcast to many of my friends and family.
Hey, thank you for taking the time to do the podcast every week and sharing your knowledge with listeners. I was initially resistant to AI but made a New Year’s resolution to learn more about it and embrace it. I stumbled across your show and it has helped me immensely. I feel up to date with AI water cooler talk, I feel empowered to experiment beyond basic chatting and I feel like I can better embrace a future with AI. I felt especially compelled to leave a review after the most recent episode mentioning journalism school. I’m a journalist/newsroom manager and for a long time viewed AI as fake or untrustworthy, but it’s clear we need to leverage it and create systems to use it while maintaining journalistic integrity. You’re doing a service to the public with this podcast and I hope you know you’re appreciated.
I’ve been following the show for well over a year and it has leapfrogged my understanding of the industry, the players, and the products tremendously. This team really cares about the people who listen and society in general, they know what they’re talking about and they’re fun to listen to.
The hosts continuously state they are providing unbiased opinions but then move on to make unsubstantiated claims about the current government and statements about the economy that suggest socialist view points. When the purpose of a private company is to employ people no matter the expense, you know there is a problem. I had to quit listening due to the frustration the episodes would leave me with despite the many good insights into AI.
