Cut & Tell is a real-time account of becoming a surgeon—at the exact moment the training wheels come off. Hosted by plastic surgery chief resident Elizabeth Malphrus, this show follows the transition from residency to “year one”: the first, most disorienting, and most defining stretch of a surgical career. It’s where the identity you’ve spent a decade building is suddenly tested—clinically, professionally, and personally. This is not a retrospective. It’s happening now. Through solo episodes, unfiltered conversations, and stories from inside the operating room and beyond, Cut & Tell explores what it actually takes to become a surgeon: the structure of training, the emotional cost, the invisible curriculum, and the tension between perfection and reality in a high-stakes field. It also asks harder questions—about trust in medicine, the role of physicians in a changing cultural landscape, and what it means to step into authority when you’re not sure you’re ready.

I am starting my final year of a veterinary zoological medicine residency. In vet med, I completed my DVM, did multiple internships, and matched to a residency at the point of having been a doctor for three years (also will be 6 years out when I finish). My job involves training to practice all kinds of medicine (general preventative medicine, internal med, surgery, approximating and consulting with any specialty you can think of, the “ultimate generalist” we often say) for zoo species housed in AZA-accredited institutions. Fortunately and unfortunately, so many of the things you talk about overlap, and I know this to be the case across many types of veterinary residencies. The podcast is so relatable and a lot of the themes speak to me. Thank you for using your platform to advocate, empower, and encourage residents to find strength in their position. I look forward to listening to more about your journey as a new attending - it is inspiring to hear more about the light at the end of the journey!
I am currently finishing up a surgical fellowship, and I have listened to every single episode. From the very first one, I felt as though someone had taken the words I’d been meaning to say for years, and had the courage to spell them out loud-elegantly, genuinely, and without holding back. Thank you, Liz for touching on topics that so many in the surgical community still treat as taboo. I only wish I’d had this resource during my own residency. But I will absolutely be passing it on to current trainees and anyone considering to enter the world of surgery. Looking forward to more!
I’m a rising pgy3 in neurosurgery and I can’t say enough good things about all of Dr. Malphrus’ content. She gives such incredible insight and articulates it with poise. I feel so seen every time she shares a “hot take”. An essential podcast for residents as well as their loved ones. I love listening post call - Good luck with your next chapter :)
Liz is articulate, humorous and insightful. The fresh air and true to life exposure she brings will help future docs, patients and even older established docs!
