I love listening to/watching Nurse Erica. I always feel like I’m getting the facts and not one side of the situation at hand. I also always feel well informed about current nursing events all around the country. Thanks for always being so on top of it all and keeping us all in the loop!!
I wish I’d had this informative podcast while I was still working. (1983-2017 NICU in large teaching hospital). When I started speaking up against abusive MDs or unsafe staffing I was not backed up by other nurses in my unit. I reported 2 surgeons. 1 for abuse of staff (a surgeon verbally abused staff regularly) + 1 for abuse of a baby….when a surgeon wanted to take scissors to re-open a mostly healed heart surgery incision without any pain med—and then threatened to have me fired for insisting he order a pain med. My manager and the head Medical head of our unit were “shocked” but did not help me with reporting that MD for 1. Causing unnecessary pain to an infant. His excuse was “I’m too busy to wait!” It took me 2 minutes to get the med but when I came back to the bedside he had already cut open the healed wound and baby was purple and screaming. 2. Nurse abuse via threats It took me 5 months to get to that surgeon’s department head to report the incident. The angry MD was hated by most of the staff but they were ‘afraid’ to go with me on a complaint. That MD had to go anger to management but the effects didn’t last. So whenever I heard him going off on staff I walked over and reminded him I have the courage to report him again — and he’d stop. I was allowed to refuse to take his patients. (Manager KNEW I don’t back down to abuse + didn’t want the ‘hassle’ SHE’D have to go through😆).
Loved Dr. Laws’ episode! I especially appreciated the insights of the hidden physiological costs of staying in survival mode for too long. So helpful to nurses as a reminder that our symptoms are not personal failures.
I have been listening to this podcast for a few months. Most of the topics shine the light on the real hardships nurses face daily. I just finished listening to the latest episode detailing the incompetence and retaliatory nature of the board of nursing. While this episode focused on the Kansas board, they could have been discussing any of the state boards. My heart broke for Amy, the guest as she spoke of her horrific experience with a government agency with zero oversight and enormous power. I listened to Erica’s announcement afterwards that detailed the erasure of her subscribers on Apple Podcasts. I listen on Spotify but just joined on Apple. One question- I clicked follow but can’t find a place for subscribe Or automatic download. Any help with this?? Thanks Erica. Don’t let the trolls get you down. You’re doing a great job! Addendum- your interview with Laura Gasparis was awesome! She has been my “ nurse crush” for 30 years!!
