The Con: Kaitlyn's Baby

by CBC + BBC World Service

Kaitlyn Braun, a pregnant young woman in crisis, takes dozens of birth workers through an escalating series of disasters – rape, baby loss, and even a coma. One by one, the doulas struggle to support her and grieve with her, and even save her life as they’re led down a distressing path. And then the truth comes out. In this six-part true crime series, Sarah Treleaven untangles a complex web of lies and deception to ask who Kaitlyn really is and why she did the things that she did. Cases like these puzzle legal experts and raise intricate moral and ethical questions. This is not your average con. Kaitlyn is not your usual scammer. The Con: Kaitlyn's Baby is the 2026 Winner of the Podcast Academy’s Ambie Award for Best Documentary Podcast. Kaitlyn's Baby is Season 2 of The Con — a podcast exposing the art of deception — from CBC and the BBC World Service. Season 1 - the critically acclaimed catfishing quest, Love, Janessa, launched in January 2023. Content warning: The latest season of The Con contains references to medical emergencies, including baby loss. We also deal with sexual assault and there is some strong language.

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

I appreciate the CBC and their research for podcasts. Care was taken with all of the complicated sides of the story about Janessa and those involved. Fantastic reporting and great interviews. Gained a show follower immediately.

K_merr · Dec 2024

I really enjoyed the entire podcast. It is well put together and is captivating taking you on a journey. Beautifully edited, and put together Hannah who is the host/journalist has the most lovely voice, and could listen to anything she puts out.

Nonestoplisten001 · May 2023

Good investigative journalism as well as a well-told story. I appreciated the perspective offered about this common type of scam. Also loved the nuanced, respectful, and knowledgeable info about victims (including Vanessa) and the subcultures and economic/post-colonial forces in which the work of scamming thrives.

CrowHollow · Mar 2023

The host takes an interesting subject and makes it absolutely hilarious with her brilliant deadpan delivery. I would listen to her reading the phone book.

Nickoval · Mar 2023

I really wanted to like this podcast, but the storytelling aspect of it is so disjointed. The first few episodes are good, and draw you in. However, it seems that each episode now is just more of the same, with new information promised each week, and never delivered. It reminds me of those online videos where they claim they’re going to pour the paint on the canvas or show you something really amazing, and never do. They just say they’re going to over and over and you’re left waiting for the big reveal.

Angela Fulton · Feb 2023

Ironic that a podcast about scammers is a bit of a scam. As it turns out, the entire quest to find out who the real Janessa is was a bit overblown. Janessa Brazil was one of the largest adult entertainers in the world and was a cohost of a nationally syndicated radio show. Interesting premise but ultimately a disappointing series.
