Texas Monthly True Crime: The Problem With Erik

by Texas Monthly

Erik Maund had it all. A wife and kids, a mansion by the Austin Country Club golf course, and an executive position with his family’s car dealership. But in March 2020, a message from a stranger put everything at risk. Someone knew Erik had an affair with an escort, and wanted money to keep quiet. Erik didn’t pay the money, though. He didn’t go to the cops, either. Instead, he paid Charlie Sheen’s former bodyguard and a couple of special ops-trained security contractors to confront the blackmailer. Things didn’t go according to plan. In “The Problem with Erik,” host Katy Vine and producer Ana Worrel tell the twisted story of what came next: a perfect storm of secrets, mistaken identities, and tragic miscommunications that left two people dead. From the Texas Monthly team behind “Tom Brown’s Body,” “Stephenville,” and "Shane and Sally" comes the latest true story of crime and justice in the Lone Star State. A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

This podcast is so well-done, in every way. What a treasure. I felt so much for Holly. This case reminds me of the movie Fargo, so much irony, disregard for life and just plain bad luck. Thank you for sharing this scathing portrait of humanity, it needs to be known.

This is a wonderful collection of amazing stories from the talented story tellers at Texas Monthly. I don’t know what fairy blessed TM with their amazing journalists but I’ve never once been let down, from the stories they choose to the way it’s presented to the cadence of their voices. When I don’t know what to listen to I literally search Texas Monthly and know it’s something great. HIGHLY recommend all their pods.

Texas Monthly’s productions are the gold standard for investigative journalism. It is such a relief not to have to endure the chatty, laughing, hosts who seem to populate the podcast world. Everything about these productions is miles ahead of pretty much every other true crime podcast.

An intriguing story told in a meticulous, well laid out fashion. True crime that seems like fiction kept me engaged and treated from the go. TM always does a fantastic job of keeping me curious. Great job to the team who put ‘Erik’ together. I am not so patiently awaiting the next pod story you all have to share. Nice work!
