by Sony Music Entertainment
The year is 2021. Elizabeth Holmes, once the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire, walks into a San Jose courtroom accused of lying to investors, doctors, and patients about her blood-testing startup, Theranos. Her charisma made her a Silicon Valley icon. Now it may be her only defense. John Carreyrou, the reporter who broke the Theranos scandal, takes you inside the trial that ended with a guilty verdict and a prison sentence of more than a decade, as he examines Silicon Valley’s fake-it-til-you-make-it culture and the case against Holmes. I have listened to many true crime podcasts and to put this podcast in with the other’s does it a great injustice. The story of the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos is captivating. John’s podcast is told with integrity, authenticity and honesty. He meticulously takes you on a journey through the eyes and ears who were a part of it. John’s resources were relevant not random or third party speculation. His reputation as a journalist gave him the credibility that held the door open for all of those from The world according to Elizabeth Holmes to walk through and tell their truth. He told a story without bias or judgement, just the facts. After listening to his podcast I immediately purchased his book. For anyone who has watched The Drop Out on Netflix, his podcast and his book takes it to a whole other level!
I am an avid, podcast listener - investigative reporting, real events, true crime. Hands-down, this is THE BEST podcast I have ever listened to. Thank you John Carreyrou for your years of hard work, and thank you Tyler Shultz for doing the right thing against all odds.
I thought I knew everything I needed to know about this case and almost passed this podcast up. So glad I didn’t. Excellent podcast and a deep dive into the cunning con artist Elizabeth Holmes. Knowing now her sentence, and knowing federal tends to let felons out early for good behavior, I hope she does the majority of the 11.5 years she’s been given. She got what she deserved.
I found the Bad Blood: Final Chapter podcast riveting! Carreyrou explains in great detail the process and time he painstakingly took to uncover the facts that ultimately revealed the truth about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. This is what authentic journalism should embrace. I hope justice is served with Ms. Holmes’ sentencing and incarceration. Thanks, Mr. Carreyrou.
I read the book and loved it, phenomenal pacing and reporting. It was a fascinating and page turning account. I thought this podcast would expand on the book and report mostly on events after its conclusion. Instead it plods through the main points of the book in a far less engaging and detailed way. Unlike the book, the tone skews polemic, which is completely unnecessary as the facts speak for themselves in this case. The last episode barely covers anything that happened at trial and is so lazily scripted and edited that “ya know” appears dozens of times throughout the discussion. Save your time on this podcast and just read the book.
