This podcast is absolutely riveting. John’s story along with the narrator’s analysis and necessarily probing questions gets at the heart of what was tragic and wrong about the ex-gay movement. It is a warning that its recent revival needs to be exposed as fraudulent and quashed. While the story is both sad and tragic, the way it unfolds here engages and draws you in. This one of the best podcasts I’ve ever listened to.

John does a beautiful job of telling his story from the beginning to end. He doesn’t shy away from his responsibility in the movement and that pain is felt through this story. I am glad I took the time to hear this complete story.

This story is SO important for those of us who grew up believing and being told we can change. John is brave for doing this and showing us that that is a LIE and we are all loved just the way we are.

The growth and self awareness John goes through as he atones is powerful. He did his inner work, and that takes so much bravery. I wish more people would atone an own up to their mistakes.

I keep waiting for John to take responsibility and acknowledge the harm he and his organization did. He mostly focuses on how hard it was personally. He does talk about not wanting more people to be harmed but I have yet to hear anything about trying to reckon with the damage. In passing he acknowledges some people died but doesn’t seem to acknowledge that the message of his movement shamed and harmed millions. This is a podcast focused on him and his personal feelings. I guess this is consistent with his entire trajectory- how can he monetize his own actions and experiences?
