Leon Neyfakh is a journalist and podcaster best known as the co-creator and host of Slow Burn, Fiasco, and Backfired. He has been a reporter for Slate, The Boston Globe, and The New York Observer and is the author of the book The Next Next Level. Listen to his newest podcasts here. Season 3: OnlyFantasy In this provocative investigation into OnlyFans— the adult platform where subscribers around the world spent more than $7 billion in 2024— journalist Leon Neyfakh teams up with comedian and OnlyFans creator Gracie Canaan for a one-of-a-kind exploration into the current state of human connection. Throughout, they discover that the site originally built for spicy adult content has quietly and surprisingly become something more complicated— an emotional marketplace where desire, performance, care, fantasy, and vulnerability seemingly blur together. As Neyfakh and Canaan navigate timely questions about autonomy, performance, and profit, a question emerges: is connection mediated by a screen still authentic? To find the answer, they meet creators building lucrative businesses, subscribers who believe they’ve found something real, professional “chatters” who are paid to simulate affection, and pioneers who have helped engineer intimacy at scale. Captivating and tender, OnlyFantasy is ultimately about the cost of loneliness, the seductive power of desire, and how the rules of human intimacy are being rewritten online. Is what’s happening on OnlyFans real? Or is it only a fantasy?  Season 2: Final Thoughts: Jerry Springer Jerry Springer wasn’t supposed to become the host of The Jerry Springer Show. Before the chairs started flying and the fights became a daytime TV staple, the man then known as Gerald Springer was an idealistic rising star in Democratic politics, with ambitions to one day be elected governor of Ohio.  From Leon Neyfakh and Prologue Projects — the team behind Slow Burn, Fiasco, Backfired, and Think Twice: Michael Jackson — comes Final Thoughts: Jerry Springer. You may think you know Springer, the notorious ringmaster of what TV Guide once called “the worst show in television history.” But long before Springer’s name became synonymous with outrageous guests, taboo confessions, and vicious on-stage brawls, he was the mayor of Cincinnati — a serious and popular politician who many believed was the future of the Democratic Party. So, what happened? This series traces Springer’s unlikely transformation — from the son of Jewish refugees who fled Nazi Germany, to a respected public servant, to the face of a show many called a symptom of cultural decline. Through intimate interviews with the people who knew him best — family, political insiders, and the producers who helped shape his show — Final Thoughts will bring you closer than ever to the man behind the spectacle, and maybe even cause you to rethink some of your own life choices. Final Thoughts isn’t just a story about one man’s improbable career path. It’s about how far someone can go for success and what they’re willing to trade to stay on top. Was Springer pulled into the gutter, or did he just understand it better than anyone else?  Season 1: Think Twice: Michael Jackson More than a decade since Michael Jackson’s death, his legacy remains complicated and unresolved. Think Twice: Michael Jackson is an exploration of the King of Pop’s life and impact — and an investigation into why his global influence continues to endure, despite the disturbing allegations against him. In this ten-part series, journalists Leon Neyfakh and Jay Smooth bring you a new perspective on the Michael Jackson story, based on dozens of original interviews with people who watched it unfold from up close.

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

I’d say the first 3 episodes are really interesting, shedding light on OnlyFans, and taking us through the experiences of the creators and subscribers, even the hosts. After that, the episodes begin to feel a bit repetitive - another woman talking about her relationship with male subscribers. Yeah, the firsthand accounts are interesting to listen to, but it’s all basically the same. Got it. Let’s move on! But, they never do. I’m just shocked, out of 6 episodes, each being around 45 minutes, they never manage to examine anything else outside of female creators and their male subscribers. In my opinion, they dropped the *balls* hardcore. What about female creators and their female subscribers? What about male creators and their female or male subscribers? I guess this was supposed to reveal the profound notion of women choosing to go into porn on their own terms. Still, why just the white heterosexual women? There was no examination of creators or subscribers who were not caucasian or who weren’t straight. I expected to hear about various facets of OnlyFans, various creators, etc. It’s just a shame that there was an intentional decision to keep this in a white hetero narrative.

Great reporting, enjoyed Leon’s breadcrumb admissions - hey, honesty counts - and moreso Gracie’s empathy for humans, the compassion comes through. Relatively nonjudgmental about sex work I thought, which should stay in the control of the people doing the work. Good caution about the fleecing of bros by the bros. Educational and enjoyable.

JenBombus · Jul 2026

A really interesting topic to dive into, especially given OnlyFans’ ever-growing popularity. It was smart to partner up with an actual creator to hear that side of the industry, as well as all the other interesting figures they interviewed. I do wish the podcast dove more into the fact that a majority of OnlyFans users are men. That was obvious especially with the men that were interviewed for the series. It would’ve been cool to hear them talk about why they think that men are the ones who gravitate the most towards OF.

Devoured this podcast about OF and the psychology of its users. The hosts add depth and humor at just the right parts. Obsessed with the storytelling and the moments of real heart and humor. Highly recommend.

Re: Season 3, Only Fantasy: I listened to every episode of season 3 so that I could leave a fair review. I am deeply disturbed by the content. I understand that journalism is supposed to be objective, but this podcast went out of its way to excuse what is objectively reprehensible (and in some cases , criminal ) behavior- pedophilia, sexual assault, and betrayal/deception. Sexual assault- the man who was preyed upon by his girlfriend’s mother. That was sexual assault and statutory r*pe. Why was this not called out by the host? Pedophilia- several interviewees mentioned that there is a strong interest in OF creators who can pass for 14-17 years old. This is pedophilia, and is not something that should be glossed over as just kink/fantasy. This is a huge societal problem. Betrayal/Deception- it was mentioned that many OF customers are married men. We can deduce that not all of their spouses are aware of their husband’s participation on this site. Why aren’t we men held accountable for honesty, transparency, and DISCIPLINE for their sexual urges? Truly disgusted at this season, and its attempt to normalize the behaviors I mentioned above.

Philly listener 215 · Jul 2026

I tried listening to the OnlyFans podcast and honestly couldn’t finish it. What struck me most was not the platform itself, but the level of dysfunction being presented as normal, healthy, and even empowering. The idea that paid, transactional interactions can somehow replace genuine human connection is deeply troubling. What I heard felt less like entertainment and more like a glimpse into a culture built on loneliness, exploitation, and emotional confusion. The saddest part is how many people seem willing to convince themselves that these relationships are harmless or fulfilling when they are often anything but. The entire ecosystem appears designed to monetize insecurity, intimacy, and human vulnerability. In my opinion, no one involved walks away unscathed. Whether it’s creators, subscribers, partners, or families, there is collateral damage that rarely gets discussed. It feels like a soulless pit of despair that profits from brokenness while insisting it’s empowering. Relationships are damaged, trust is eroded, and the consequences often extend far beyond the individuals directly involved. The claim that it’s all harmless rings hollow. I finished the episode shaking my head and feeling genuinely concerned about what this says about our culture and the next generation.
