My go to show and love the new Masterclass format. So much knowledge helping hurting people with realistic advice.

Highly recommend! Dr. John knows how to meet people where they are, gives great insight/advice and somehow gets very deep in a quick format. Solid mix of compassion/validation and challenging/leveling with the callers. I’ve even gotten some tips as a therapist that I now use in my practice. I also SO appreciate knowing Dr. John is religious but not feeling he leads with it or only has that framework. His self disclosure about his own marriage and beliefs is there but he doesn’t enter the call with an obvious agenda.

Honestly, this is my favorite podcast ever. I’m so glad I found him on the Ramsey podcast. Dr. John is level-headed and gives great advice based on his many years of experience. He personally has experienced a ton between working in schools, colleges, and sitting with hurting people. He is empathetic, kind, but also gives people the truth even if it hurts them for a minute. I hate all of the negative reviews mention one specific story that someone disagrees with. Of course people may disagree with his opinion sometimes, but he challenges people to think differently, and if we could all see someone else’s point and give it some thought, the world would be a much better place. And of course his banter with Kelly just makes my day!!

And they are FANTASTIC! I’ve dealt with trauma, PTSD, and reactivity my whole life. Even though the stories are all different, there’s always a nugget from every single one that I can apply to my own life. His advice has also helped me to help others using all that I’m learning.

I usually find John to be measured, compassionate, and kind. However in a recent podcast about a mom finding out her daughter is dating the girl she is having sleepovers with he said if she is going to hold on to her values she has to go all in on it and accept the consequences that her daughter may cut her off but it’s like smoking-of course as a good parent she would tell her daughter that she doesn’t approve of smoking but there is nothing her daughter can do to make her not love her. This may sound good on the surface but it’s deeply harmful to gay kids. People’s sexuality isn’t up for your debate. Parents-you do not own your kids sexuality! It isn’t a different set of values. As a mental health professional with a PhD, I think multiple PhDs how can you continue to carry on with this trope. Conservative and Christian parents continue to have gay kids cause that’s just part of the human family. Gay kids have higher rates of depression, suicidal ideation because of nonsense like this-especially in conservative Christian homes. Let’s talk about healthy sexuality, like consent, honesty, safety…those values apply to heterosexual and homosexual relationships alike. Being gay is not a bad habit like smoking. We can do better for our kids and mental health professionals should be held to a higher standard or they shouldn’t be working with people. Sorry John initially you gave some good advice but the smoking comment negated that- you missed the mark on this one big time.

I’ve listened to this show for over a year. Although I know I’m not political aligned with the host, he usually has a nuanced, rationale approached to problems so that political ideology is a nonissue, which is refreshing. Not today. A man with a seemingly perfect wife calls in with one issue: she won’t change her last name 5 years into their marriage. Which is terrible for him, because people side eye him and what about his family name?? Can’t she see that?? Instead of pushing back and considering why a woman pursuing a law degree who did not change her name when the marriage began wouldn’t want to change her name now, the host simply suggests that they need to have a conversation. Never does he push back and say, “and what if she simply refuses? What about her family name? Why shouldn’t the person who grows the child have an equal desire to name that child?” No instead he infantilizes an adult woman and “both sides are crazy” the situation. Unfollowed. Stupidity.
