Sarah Marshall is at her best in this well-produced podcast. She’s a kind, humane, and generous interviewer. The stories are fascinating and heart breaking, and I wonder if this podcast could even be produced in the US these days.

I’m a big Satanic Panic head from way back, and I have seen and heard a lot of content around this subject. Sarah Marshal and her team somehow managed to make it all new, and to add to the subject from new angles. It is a remarkable achievement in striking just the right balance of having fun with the absurdity, while exploring the deeply emotional and sometimes tragic stories of people who were caught up in it. Some of my favorite content from this series is actually the bonus material.

The Devil You Know grapples with the Satanic Panic with a fresh approach, deep research, and engaging interviews with people who experienced it firsthand. For all of the Satanic Panic that I did know about, most of these stories and voices were new to me, with the exception of the final one. I can’t properly voice how much I appreciated the approach and inclusion of that final episode.

As far as the one-star reviews go, I’m not surprised. Not because I think they’re correct, but because they’re from the exact group that this podcast aims to shine a light upon. They are proof that what this series speaks on is very real, and the Satanic Panic is still very much alive.

I could listen to Sarah Marshall do a podcast about paint drying and love every second of it. She simply does not miss.

Listen and like this podcast, but despite the interesting premise, I couldn’t get past Sarah Marshall’s dismissive and sardonic tone of voice. I’m a feminist who came of age in the 80s and even I got tired of the man-, Christian-, Regan-hating rhetoric. (She really doesn’t like Ronald). Interviewees were good, but again overshadowed by the attitude. Too bad.
