This encapsulation of a strange and protracted crime case effectively tells a story that must not be forgotten. Listening, I relived the events as they unfolded, and it particularly brought me back to the analysis that gradually entered the consciousness of Silicon Valley after Kaczynski’s capture. How his manifesto would be cited by tech ethicists and luminaries. I feel the series gave this part of the story short shrift. Among the things conspicuously omitted: The faithful interview of Kaczynski in prison that ran in McSweeney’s Quarterly. The citations from his manifesto in visionary Ray Kurzweil’s The Age of Spiritual Machines. Inventor and Tech founder Bill Joy’s deference to the impending risks that motivated Kaczynski’s crimes in his Wired opinion piece Why the Future Doesn’t Need Us. It begs for another podcast that tells this part of the story and how it relates to Aristotle’s insights into hubris and human fallibility, Thoreau’s teachings on resistance, and the Luddites’ practice of it, and now AI titans’ warnings of doom. To not make this connection directly in the series seems a missed opportunity to me.

The reporting is easy to listen to and incredibly well researched. The interviews of the FBI agents, the first suspects, the brother. . . Fascinating. You don’t need to have known about this case to find it interesting.
