It’s easy to see a child’s education as a path determined by grades, test scores and extra curricular activities. But genuine learning is about so much more than the points schools tally. MindShift explores the future of learning and how we raise our kids. This podcast is part of the MindShift education site, a division of KQED News. You can also visit the MindShift website for episodes and supplemental blog posts or tweet us @MindShiftKQED or visit us at MindShift.KQED.org. There was some great information in here around phonemic awareness especially around blending and segmenting. However I keep hearing missteps in episodes like this. Reading recovery DOES include phonemic awareness and phonics. Reading recovery teachers are highly skilled intervention teachers who meet students where they are and then take them beyond and the above skills are a part of that. On the topic of balanced literacy: there are multiple aspects to this, hence it being called balanced. Phonemic awareness and phonics is one part of this system. As a first grade teacher these have both helped my readers. Please consider spotlighting educational experts and not educational journalists. It has been causing many challenges in our field.
This podcast adds so much to my life, I don’t know how I survived before it. Short yet tells a complete story that is well researched and captivating. As a parent this expands my view so wildly and for that I am appreciative.
As a parent, podcaster and early educator, I listen and refer to this podcast regularly. The content is well-produced, researched and well-rounded information that is useful as well as entertaining. I share it out to my network often. Thank you!
This is the absolute best podcast for teachers! I listen to this on my way to school and I bound out of the car reinvigorated to build teamwork, connect with parents, and think outside the box with my heartstrings pulled for the anxiety, violence, and screen addiction many of my students are fighting silently everyday.
