Genuinely obsessed with this podcast and before I knew it I jumped ahead and watched five seasons of Step by Step. What a blast to revisit the show 30 years later.
Christine and Stacy are hilarious, thoughtful, poignant, and have chef’s kiss chemistry. Anyone who grew up in the 90s and watched the show needs this podcast. The gap between season 1 and 2 is going to kill me.

Finally!! I keep getting soo excited everytime I see 90s recap/nostalgia podcasts but I’m sadly disappointed with the hosts. Staci and Christine are perfect I love the recaps but I LOVE their conversations and memories from that time. My new favorite podcast!

I was a fan of Step By Step back when it first aired on ABC. I used to watch it on the regular. And then, one day very recently, while sick in bed, I found it on Max and watched the whole series all over again. A quick Google search turned up the Deja Vu podcast, and when I found out it existed, I binged it as well.
It’s easy to look at Step By Step as a goofy comedy because it is clearly a goofy comedy. However, Step By Step offered catharsis for a kid going through the blended family situation while this show was airing. It forced me to take an empathetic look at my familial situation through the eyes of characters like Carol, the matriarch who reminds me very much of my stepmother. Let’s say there was a lot of culture shock coming into a blended family. So, while the goofy sitcom did permeate Step By Step, it wasn’t my general takeaway from the show.
What appeals to me about this podcast is Keanan and Lakin’s approach to narrative. Each podcast episode contains a thoughtful and sometimes brutal recap of a Step By Step episode, followed by banter, with some of it quite candid. Having grown up with the actors and their characters (I’m only slightly younger than Lakin), it’s good to know that I’m not the only one who faced the world in such a way. And I absolutely appreciate that about Deja Vu. The fact that Deja Vu is also focused on Step By Step is simply a bonus.
I know this is a podcast review, not a novel, so I’ll sum it up. I appreciate this podcast for what it is: an observation of a show that poked fun at the human condition. And what’s enjoyable here is the behind-the-scenes look at that and the real-world lives of the actors who lived it. I hope this podcast finds a way to continue past the 160 episodes somehow. But even if it lasts as long as the series did, it’s well worth the time. Enjoy!

Step by Step was one of my favorite shows growing up and I’ve enjoyed watching it again. As someone who loves learning interesting facts from behind the scenes, this is both a fun trip down memory lane but also scratches that itch for knowing how the sausage gets made. Love your breakdowns, and that you share a lot of the same thoughts watching it back!
