Josh Pate has positioned himself as the king of the college football nerds, and I proudly count myself among his football-nerd subjects. This is by far the best national college football podcast, which is amazing given the fact Josh doesn't even have a co-host to help move the show along. I used to watch parts of the show on YouTube, but now I listen to the whole show in pod form.
Josh is one of the best. Smart analysis, not just echoing popular sentiments. Loves the game.
I’ve been a Pate State homer for several years and evangelized it to numerous friends. But since Saban’s retirement, the podcast has become difficult to wade through. Unless there’s an interview, nearly every B block (behind realignment and reform) is devoted to Bama. I don’t know Josh’s rooting allegiance, but I’ve become convinced he’s a Bama fan since January. It’s almost as if he’s trying to convince the CFB world about kaelin deboer and bama. Deboer could be great—but there’s nothing unique about what’s happened since his hiring. He’s doing the right thing, but nothing to gush over. This is no knock on Bama—they’re the fulcrum of college football for 15-20 years. But Pate devoted far less airtime to them when they were perennial #1 than he has since Saban’s retirement. Get back to what made this podcast great—an evenhanded approach to the entirety of cfb. My four-star rating is based solely on pre-retirement, when it was a five-star podcast. Since then, it’s been a one-star podcast.
Josh is super smart and super fair. Great show if you can handle hearing the truth. Honest voice in the college football world who owns everything he says.
If you want constant doublespeak and backtracking by someone so they can act like their wrong opinion is somehow not what they said and they are actually always right… this is your podcast. If you want logic and a well explained sound basis when someone gives their opinions… this isn’t for you.
The show puts too much emphasis on power rankings and point spreads and has helped contribute to the inexplicable shift to games not mattering as much as Vegas odds. The spirit of competition and the essence of sports have given way to corporate tv dollars and gambling. The games don’t matter, the hard work of the athletes to overcome diversity doesn’t matter. And for that I’ve lost all interest.
