What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

Earlier this year, I discovered RHP#9 and have been working my way through the shows (I’m about halfway there with a few stops to “catch up” with current episodes.) What I find most interesting is how the show has evolved. Jeffrey and Cecil are thoughtful reviewers, often developing theories or gaining insights to the movies they watch. As Jeffrey watches more horror, he’s less apprehensive (by his own admission) to watch gore and frights. Both of the hosts have evolved. They’ve become more professional with their criticism and observations being less colored by personal bias. More current reviews embrace how these movies fit within the genre of horror. The show is smart, random (of course), and a great format. And the episode show art is amazing as well. Highly recommended. Boo!

Cecil and Jeffrey make my day each time. Spot on dissection of the genres of horror, no pretentiousness, just honest dialogue about the maligned wonderment that is every thing that goes bump in the night.

I got here through You Are Good, who had the fellas as guests for an episode on the movie Demons. I’m definitely a Cecil on the horror enthusiast spectrum, but with the back catalogue these two have, I’m really enjoying spending the cold months listening to an episode about the movies I know by heart, then getting to look up the ones I want to revisit or have never heard of before and listen to those. Just listened to an early episode in which they considered Tigers Are Not Afraid, but so far as I know they haven’t done it yet. Watch it guys! It’s fantastic.

Whether you like horror, or you love horror, Random Horror 9 is a fantastic horror review with two familiar podcast personalities from Night Vale Presents. They dive into each movie (in a random order) and talk about how gross or disturbing, funny or shocking the movies are. From the Universal Classics to Cronenberg, they explore all the horror favorites and…not so favorites to see if they’re a movie anyone can enjoy or if it’s just a bit much. I am not a big Horror guy, but I have listened to the entire catalog and was surprised to know how many of the hundreds I had seen or was familiar with! Jeffrey and Cecil are both funny and entertaining!

Some nice discussion, but ruined by the fact that the noise gate on recording software is on. Result is that often the first syllable or word of each person speaking is missing. Please listen to your own podcasts carefully and review. Turn off the auto noise gate.
