Gastropod

by Cynthia Graber and Nicola Twilley

Food with a side of science and history. Every other week, co-hosts Cynthia Graber and Nicola Twilley serve up a brand new episode exploring the hidden history and surprising science behind a different food- or farming-related topic, from aquaculture to ancient feasts, from cutlery to chile peppers, and from microbes to Malbec. We interview experts, visit labs, fields, and archaeological digs, and generally have lots of fun while discovering new ways to think about and understand the world through food. Find us online at gastropod.com, follow us on Twitter @gastropodcast, and like us on Facebook at facebook.com/gastropodcast.

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

I’ve listened to every episode in the backlog, and finally get to listen to them as they come out!!! This podcast has kept me company on long car trips and commutes for years. I know I eat healthier because of it, and I know so much more about the world, now! Thank you so much for making fantastic episode after fantastic episode!

TechyTrickster · Jun 2026

I really enjoy Gastropod’s thoughtful blend of history, science, and social issues (such as including class, race, and colonialism in their discussions); I always learn a lot. I also appreciate how professional and polished each episode is. Many podcast hosts are unfortunately rather careless in their work. I wish others would take a cue from Gastropod.

LadyGrady · Jun 2026

Gastropod is an always interesting, engagingly presented podcast about the science and history of food and its role in human culture. Highly recommended.

Baby Bella Twinkie-Butt · May 2026

I gave this show 5 stars because it delivers great content on the cultural background and science of food., which is of great interest to me as an avid cook, I’ve learned so much. I could do without the political commentary and interjections.

brindled congo · Mar 2026

I initially enjoyed this podcast, but over time it’s become clear that it’s not grounded in objective research. Some episodes feel more like infomercials than investigations—like the canola oil episode, which featured a canola oil producer for an inappropriately long segment (inappropriate because the show claims to be about the science/history of food). The show is worryingly loose with facts, prioritizing feel-good storytelling and entertainment over accuracy. It’s not just disappointing—it’s risky to listen passively, because so much of the information isn’t reliable.
