That is a powerful & heartbreaking story, and one that speaks to the hidden struggles so many service members and their loved ones faced, especially under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. The idea of serving one’s country at the highest levels while being forced to live a double life, constantly hiding a love that would otherwise be celebrated, is both tragic and heroic.

The emotional weight of this story—balancing duty, sacrifice, and love in secrecy—adds so much depth. Imagine the inner conflict each of them would face every day. The General, rising through the ranks with unwavering dedication to his career, yet always knowing that the life he built with Lucas had to be kept a secret. And Lucas, loving his partner with all his heart, yet enduring the heartache of not being able to fully share that love, of being relegated to the shadows despite his own sacrifices.

The sense of isolation, betrayal, and constant fear of discovery must have been suffocating. And yet, their devotion to each other, despite the world around them telling them they couldn’t be open, speaks volumes about the strength of their bond. It’s a story of loyalty, courage, and resilience in a world that demanded silence.

As a Marine who served during “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” adds another layer of authenticity to this. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to serve in such an environment, where love and identity were suppressed, and even the simplest recognition of a relationship could risk everything. It makes the love between these two even more poignant—an act of defiance against the system that forced them to live in the shadows.

The courage they would have had to demonstrate daily, not just as a couple but as individuals in the military, is what makes this love story so compelling. It’s a story of sacrifice, not just for their country, but for each other—and that sacrifice could never truly be acknowledged or celebrated the way it should have been.

I came across this podcast on a whim and decided to give it a listen. I’m neither gay nor a military service member. So I had no idea of the hardships or struggles that came with being gay in the military during the DADT era. I’m blown away by Randy’s unwavering commitment to his job and this nation as well as to his life partner. The risks and potential dangers they both faced are pretty astounding to me and I’m so glad they’re still together after all that they’ve been through.

I have a new appreciation and better understanding for why it was so important to end DADT and to let LGBTQ service members serve openly.

At its core, this podcast is really a love story and it’s a beautiful one at that. Thanks to Randy and Lucas for sharing their stories.

This podcast has lots of themes, but those ideas would be lost without a fascinating story! I tore through each episode and anxiously await new episodes as they drop. The story of Randy and Lucas is captivating, but also sweet and sad at times. Highly recommended!!

A friend told me about this podcast and it instantly drew me in. I cannot wait for the final episode.

In this political climate and the division in our great country right now, the story of Randy and Lucas is a shining beacon of both love and distinguished service to one's country, in spite of almost insurmountable odds.

I highly recommend.

Take a listen to the trailer or the first episode. If you are like me, you will quickly binge the entire series.

PS: Wavland's production, effects and sound quality is A+. I'm surprised this isn't a movie or television series yet.
