Informed experienced strategy game fans talking about what they know. Unlike nearly every games podcast this isn’t the exact same discussion every week about the same 3 big budget games stating the same boring viewpoints over and over. These are genuine, informed, experienced fans and professionals discussing games they love in a genre they love. It’s detailed, interesting, and exactly what games podcasts should be.
I’ve been a fan of Rob Zacny and his reviews and opinions of strategy games for years, in print and other podcasts. Although he isn’t on every cast the crew, Len/Ian/Rowan, are doing an excellent job. I’ve only recently rediscovered my love of RTS and strategy games and I’ve been binging on older episodes. Highly recommend this cast
This is a long running podcast covering strategy games. The subject matter is fantastic, and you're not likely to find another podcast offering as deep a dive into this type of gaming anywhere online. However, the hosts are hit and miss. Some of them seem to over-reach with their use of the English language a bit, which often results in "word salad" as opposed to a clear point. And if you're not a fan of vocal fry or progressive politics agendas, steer clear. Fraser is the best co-host; unfortunately he's not on all the time. If they made a super cut of just Fraser moaning about strat games, I'd give it five stars.
This show easily became one of my favorite podcasts of all time, because it reignited my interest in strategy games and helped me understand many of the layers built into these complex games. This show also makes me listen to it differently than other podcasts. The extensive archive of episodes is so rich in information that it’s easy to dive deep into the back catalog and create a list of must-have episodes. This is thanks to the singular focus of each episode on a particular game or deep dives into systems and mechanics. These episodes come in a sort of lecture/round table format that is super easy to listen to. This show has my highest recommendation.
