I am addicted to this podcast. Not only is the storytelling captivating, but as a survivor of parental psychological and psychological abuse, I find healing and validation from hearing other survivor stories. I wish everyone would listen to this podcast to learn more about the complexities of abuse and how to spot it sooner among toxic familial cycles and romantic partnerships. This podcast initially stood out as a powerful platform for people to share their stories of trauma, abuse, and survival. It offered deep, emotional insights into the lives of individuals who had been through the most difficult circumstances and emerged stronger. The authenticity and vulnerability of these stories were what made the podcast so impactful. It was a space where listeners could learn, empathize, and perhaps even find healing in shared experiences.

However, the recent shift in focus has caused the podcast to lose some of that initial depth and raw power. While relationships are a valid area of struggle and growth, the current episodes seem to focus narrowly on “bad relationships” without the same depth of exploration into trauma or personal recovery. The stories feel more superficial now, lacking the emotional weight that initially made the podcast so compelling.

It’s not that these stories aren’t important, but the podcast seems to have drifted from its original purpose. For those who tuned in to hear profound, multifaceted narratives of survival and resilience, the current direction feels like a missed opportunity. Hopefully, the creators can recapture the breadth and emotional depth that initially set this podcast apart.

Therapists, friends, family, church…. This podcast is the only thing that helped me to realize the situation we are living in IS abusive. It was the catalyst that sent me on a journey of self-love and understanding. Thank you!

I never really understood the term “gaslighting” until i stumbled across this podcast. I have personally along with my SIL been a victim of extreme narcissistic gaslighting and mental abuse by my own brother. Your podcast and everyone’s story’s has really helped me to understand my SIL thought process on the entire situation with my brother. I went from being upset that she wouldn’t stand up to him to understanding why she couldn’t.

As someone who is & who works with survivors of abuse, many of the stories on this podcast illustrate the intricacies of abuse- how easy it is to get trapped, how hard it can be to leave, etc.

But I was disgusted & lost all respect for this podcast during the season about the abusive relationship that led to a child’s death. The story was handled with deep disregard for the real victim— the murdered child!! For instance, airing the mother joking with her new husband, centering the narrative around how she was the victim, and not addressing parental neglect laws in depth, all missed the point. This season missed the target by a million miles & I hope the producers seriously consider either deleting that season or editing it to focus on the child and how both the mother & abuser failed him.

The earliest seasons of this podcast are extremely well-done and I really feel connected to the victims’ stories. The later seasons seem to lose some of the honesty and simplicity that made the first seasons stand out. It seems like the interviews are forced for the sake of shock value and entertainment and it’s lost the important message that the earlier seasons highlight. I just keep going back to listen to the first few seasons but I don’t think I’ll listen to new ones.
