Reconstruction: The Unfinished Promise is starting out to be phenomenal listen. We often skip right from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement in our history classes, but this podcast brilliantly fills in the gaps of that crucial, chaotic, and deeply important era in between.
One of my favorite authors, Malcolm Gladwell serves as a phenomenal guide, and the way the production weaves in archival letters, diaries, court records, and eyewitness accounts makes history feel incredibly present and alive. The brilliant scholars break down this time period gives the narrative so much depth and perspective.
It helps you rethink what could have been if the true promise of a multiracial democracy had been realized back then. It’s not just a history lesson; it’s a necessary reflection on how we got to where we are today and the questions we are still struggling to answer as a nation.
