World War II with Tom Hanks

by The HISTORY Channel | Back Pocket Studios | Audacy

For eighty years, the Second World War has remained the most devastating and defining conflict in human history. World War II with Tom Hanks reexamines the war through the lens of a new century. Told over twenty hours and guided by Tom Hanks, whose lifelong passion for this history has shaped some of the most profound screen portrayals of the era, the series captures the full arc of the war — from the rise of fascism in Europe to the fall of Berlin, from Pearl Harbor to Hiroshima, and the uneasy peace that follows. Each episode uncovers new dimensions of the conflict: the decisions that shaped the battlefield, the unseen networks that sustained the war effort, and the aftershocks that still shape our world today. World War II with Tom Hanks is the definitive retelling of that story for a new generation: a sweeping, deeply human portrait of how the modern world was forged in the fires of global war.

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

Very well told, high level overview of the causes, strategies and terrible cost of WWII. Always appreciate learning new aspects of humanities most tragic conflict to date and it’s critically important to never take for granted the price that was paid for freedom. “Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.”

Levi Ware · Aug 2026

Great pace of the narration and background. I know it’s an overview but if anyone wants the details behind the battles in Pelelui and Okinawa between the Old Breed (Marines) and the Japanese please read With The Old Breed by EB Sledge. It is truly horrific and almost (to me) makes the battles in Europe seem like an easy day.

Pcollins888 · Aug 2026

I’m a sucker for anything related to WW2 history. I’ve learned some new things from these shows that I hadn’t heard before. Tom’s narration is fantastic. Would love more of these podcasts on other events in history.

Gruvedaddy · Aug 2026

Figures … anything Tom Hanks touches is gold. Historically accurate as evidenced by the expert narration and just plain interesting. Amazing what this country did at a most challenging time in our history. Such a great listen.
