What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

My 15-year-old granddaughter introduced me to this podcast; she listened to it every day on the drive to school with her father. I was quickly hooked by the wide range of topics and soon became a devoted listener, often sharing interesting tidbits with others, many of whom are now listeners. After two and a half years, I finally made it to the Completionist Club. I’m looking forward to meeting others from Santa Rosa, California, the home of Charlie Brown! (How about an episode on Charles Schulz?)

A fantastic quick listen if you're the curious type. The premise of each episode is solid and interesting enough to send you off on your own rabbit hole, and I've ended up reading about a dozen subjects I'd never have gone looking for on my own. It isn't the last word on anything and it doesn't pretend to be. I caught an error in an episode on a subject I know well, emailed in, and about a week and a half later Gary chased it down and corrected it on air. That's more than most shows this size would do, and it's why I'd tell people to trust it as a starting point and then go read further.

I am currently working my way towards the Completionist Club and just got to the “Legend of Bigfoot” episode. As it started, I said aloud that if Gary ends this episode with the Mitch Hedberg bit on Bigfoot, it would officially be the greatest podcast ever. Lo and behold, Gary did not disappoint. Bravo, sir! I look forward to hitting my Completionist milestone as I hear the bathroom facilities are top notch. Thank you for everything you do.

Well researched, written, and delivered. I have used several of the episodes for my Ancient World Civilizations class. Other than a few sketchy pronunciations, the show definitely delivers.

Recent research underscores the significant impact of meat production and consumption on our planet and health. Environmental Impact: Animal agriculture is a leading contributor to environmental degradation. It accounts for a substantial portion of global greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. A 2023 study found that replacing half of the global consumption of beef, chicken, dairy, and pork with plant-based alternatives could reduce agricultural land use by nearly a third and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 31% by 2050. Additionally, the livestock sector is responsible for significant habitat destruction, leading to biodiversity loss. The 2019 IPBES Global Assessment Report identified industrial agriculture and overfishing as primary drivers of species extinction, with meat and dairy industries having a substantial impact. Health Considerations: High consumption of red and processed meats has been linked to various health issues, including heart disease and certain cancers. Conversely, plant-based diets are associated with numerous health benefits, such as reduced risks of chronic diseases. A 2023 review concluded that replacing red and processed meat with plant-based alternatives improved quality-adjusted life years and led to significant health system savings. Ethical Concerns: The ethical implications of meat consumption involve animal welfare issues, including inhumane treatment and systemic abuse in industrial farming. These practices raise significant moral questions about the exploitation of sentient beings for food. Conclusion: Promoting meat consumption, particularly through platforms like podcasts, overlooks the substantial environmental, health, and ethical challenges associated with it. Encouraging a shift towards plant-based diets can lead to significant benefits, including reduced environmental impact, improved public health, and enhanced animal welfare. For a deeper understanding of the ethical arguments against meat consumption, you might find the following discussion insightful:
