Just finished listening to the Reading Realities episode featuring Faith, and it was such an honest and powerful conversation about what it really looks like to shift teaching practice.
What stood out most was hearing her reflect on moving from more implicit instruction to explicit foundational skills instruction and realizing just how capable kindergarten students truly are when we give them direct, intentional teaching. I think so many educators will relate to that moment of recognizing that young children can handle far more than we sometimes expect, especially when instruction is clear, systematic, and grounded in the science of reading.
I also appreciated the discussion around modeling mouth movements, sound work, and helping children truly understand how sounds are produced. Those small instructional moves can make such a huge difference for beginning readers, particularly for students who need more explicit support with phonemic awareness and phonics.
A really excellent first episode that highlights both the complexity and the hope involved in changing practice to better support young readers.

I’m glad I found this podcast! I like that we’re hearing from teachers going through these changes just as we are. I found myself wanting to get in on the conversations as well. As teachers, we don’t get to discuss these topics. We hear about changes, we have professional development and then ready…implement! Thanks SUNY!
