Money Stuff: The Podcast

by Bloomberg

The audio companion to Bloomberg Opinion’s beloved Money Stuff column hosted by its author Matt Levine, “whose deadpan style mixes technical elucidation and wit” (NY Times). Once a week, Matt and his friend, Bloomberg News reporter and TV host Katie Greifeld, talk about Wall Street, finance and…other stuff. New episodes every Friday.

I read Money Stuff daily and didn’t expect to get anything from the podcast. Turns out I was wrong as Katie is enjoyable and entertaining to listen to. They have the experienced/play-by-play announcer vs color commentator style that is popular in sports because it works. I also married into a horse riding family and got to cite Katie in an argument over pony vs horse (Katie/I were right!). A podcast that lets you win arguments with in-laws? 5-stars.

I talk about the newsletter at every opportunity, and I’m so excited there’s an audio version. Katie is a surprisingly great foil for Matt—I’m very charmed by their dynamic. Sometimes my king kind of mumbles and almost seems to be talking away from the mic, so I have to change the volume constantly when I listen, but whatever, I love it. No one in the media seems to love their job the way Matt does.

I’ve read the newsletter for years and was hoping the podcast would be more than a weekly rehash. It’s a good podcast if you don’t read the newsletter regularly and I’ll give it another month to get its footing. I’m surprised by the number of ads as a Bloomberg subscriber and was hoping this would go ad-free like Odd Lots. Odd Lots is a god-tier podcast and Money Stuff is a god-tier newsletter.

Do yourself a favor: unsubscribe from the All In podcast and make Money Stuff your week-ending listen. Fun, funny, informative - exactly the newsletter in audio form. And love the Matt/Katie dynamic as well. If I tell all my friends to subscribe is that insider trading?

ChatGPT Prompt: Write a review of Matt Levine’s finance podcast in the style of Cormac McCarthy. ChatGPT: In the barren expanse of financial discourse, where jargon blooms like weeds in cracked earth, Matt Levine's podcast emerges as a lone figure, navigating the desolate landscape with a blend of wit and insight. His words, like tumbleweeds in a windstorm, roll through the mind, stirring contemplation and revealing the stark realities of modern finance. With a voice as dry as the desert air, he delves into the intricacies of markets and regulation, stripping away the veneer of complexity to expose the raw essence beneath. In Levine's world, where bulls and bears roam free, listeners are invited to journey into the heart of economic darkness, where uncertainty reigns supreme and the only certainty is the inevitability of change.

New listener but likely won’t return. Nov 8th episode on pricing - Real Page, salary ranges, farmers markets - is uninformed. I was very surprised at the lack of analysis of the topic. Discussion was off the cuff, anecdotal versus based on theoretical and empirical research. The FTC Real Page investigation identifies an enforcement mechanism. Pretty clear from the hosts’ comments that they were commenting without reading the FTC report.
