Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't

by Tony Santore

Why do some plants grow where they do? How can geology cause new plant species to evolve? Why are some plants pollinated by flies, some by bats, some by birds, and others by bees? How does a plant evolve to look like a rock? How can destroying lawns soothe the soul? This is a show about plants and plant habitat through the lens of natural selection and ecology, with a side of neurotic ranting, light humor, occasional profanity, & the perpetual search for the filthiest taqueria bathroom.

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

Everything about this show is great. Joey has renewed my hope for humanity. You think you are the only isolated misanthrope with an intense love of nature, until you meet Joey. Common sense & compassion mixed with just the right amount of sarcasm and humor, and the knowledge of science that he’s acquired through pure curiosity. I love that he is constantly learning and journeying and even better that he presses record and lets us hear his wheels spin without much of a filter. In a world full of people with something to hide, Joey is honestly the real deal.

Piercefly · Jul 2026

The ads on this play at about 3x the volume of the regular podcast. And they come out of nowhere. The talking gets interrupted, mid-sentence, with no warning, by a high-decibel blast of obnoxious ads. Why is this? Cannot listen, sorry.

Fionn MacCumhaill · May 2026

Tip: join his patreon for $5 a month to listen to podcasts ad free. The only podcast I listen to these days, Joey is a breath of fresh air, taking the listen on journeys to experience amazing plants. While I may not agree with him 100% I am wholeheartedly a fan of his goal: to share his excitement about plants and the living world. He chooses some great guests to speak with, who have shared mind blowing knowledge about the living world around us. Joey has a genuine passion for plants that is contagious. Be careful you might get hooked too and find yourself dreaming of visiting a cactus forest in Mexico.
