Great interview with Ben Barber. I retired from the muni business and when the topic of bond funds vs individual bonds came up, I don’t think it was addressed completely. Bond funds never mature, you are at the whim of the manager regarding gains and losses and NEVER receive PAR (stated bond value) at maturity for your ownership. When you own the bond, you have the option to buy or sell, at your discretion to take gains or losses based on your tax situation, and have the option to hold to maturity for which you will receive PAR (the maturity value of the bond). You also have the ability to choose premium, discount, or par ($100.00) prices on individual bonds in order to express your thesis on the market and the direction of interest rates (aggressive, defensive, or strictly for income). Bond funds have a roll but individual bonds provide far more control and flexibility.
These guys are the perfect mix of informational and entertaining. With weekly finance discussion, it’s hard to find pods that keep topics fresh. This is the pod you’re looking for, I promise.
Love this show. Always hitting the market topics while looping in life experiences. Dynamic between the two is great. Must listen every week.
I’ve been listening to Animal Spirits for years. It’s been a great mix of insight, market talk, and honest takes. Hitting 400 episodes is huge, and I’ve enjoyed the journey.
This can be entertaining, but I decided to unsubscribe. I could only handle a few minutes of it at a time. The hosts tend to go on tangents, so the flow isn’t great. They also give uninformed opinions too often. I typically don’t care for their guests on the talk your book episodes either. Michael Batnick is officially annoying. He can be obnoxious and inconsiderate of others. Overall, I would not recommend this podcast.
Him constantly cutting off Ben gets tiring. Ramit episode was hard to listen to, as the guest is condescending, looks down on people not from coastal cities or those who don’t share his progressive political views; no wonder Michael seemed to like him a lot. And too much talk about their personal lives which I don’t care about.
