A Podcast with Charlie Swenson - To Hell and Back

by Charlie Swenson, MD

This podcast series, “To Hell and Back,” is focused on the nature of hellish experiences in life, how people get into them, and to present and discuss tools for coping with hell and getting out. The various podcasts will move back and forth between different varieties of hell in life, and different tools for coping. The tools will be drawn from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), from other treatments, and from other life experiences.

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

S someone do has been being treated in DBT for over a year, I find this podcast extremely helpful. It goes further on the skills, helps me generalize them more and find appropriate applications of them more than just taking a DBT class has. I only wish he hadn’t stopped as there are topics I would have loved his perspective on, like opposite action.

TJMunk · May 2024

I’m so grateful I found this podcast with Charlie and Nicole. I’m working my way through all of them. Whether you know a lot about DBT or are new to the topic, this podcast is a gift. You can learn about DBT from Dr. Charlie Swenson, a master therapist. His conversations and role plays with Nicole enrich the learning. I especially loved the role the “session” when Nicole played a patient struggling with narcissism. Thank you for this amazing opportunity to learn and grow.

Shilih654 · Nov 2022

I really love Nicole’s voice and perspective on the show, my favorite episode by far is Identity Grammar. Listening made me feel seen and understood in a ways nothing else ever has.

rosario Betran · Nov 2022

Stimulating & Fascinating! Charlie & Nicole explore topics that we consciously or subconsciously struggle with every day- helping to define and refine these thoughts. I come away from the episodes with a greater understanding of self and a greater understanding of those around me.

MPR397 · Nov 2022

As a DBT therapist, I have loved this podcast. I have also recommended it to family and clients. Charlie has a gift for bringing the skills to life with good stories. I am grateful for this work.

Mama23kids · Sep 2019

I’m so disappointed that Nicole is not present in recent episodes. Her warm intelligence and compassion are missed. She brought the show to life.
