I have read so many self help books, articles, listened to podcasts, and training courses. This has been by far the most helpful, and insightful at breaking things down. Thank you so much for sharing your story! I feel as though this has provided tools to really heal.
I have found this so helpful in beginning to understand how to process the things that happened to me during my childhood when I didn’t have agency, and how those learned behaviors play into my adult personal and professional relationships. I’d like to offer a correction about how CoDA (Codependents Anonymous) was represented in the first three seasons. Brian said that CoDA wasn’t really helpful to him because the first step was about admitting powerlessness, but step 1 of CoDA actually states “We admitted we were powerless OVER OTHERS - that our lives had become unmanageable.” The hosts might have addressed this in later seasons, but they otherwise do a great job discussing that very concept and how we each have power to change ourselves and what we do, and the freedom that comes from realizing that we do not have the power nor the responsibility to change the feelings, thoughts, and actions of others.
This chapter broke me. I have been in a therapy group and have realized that I’m codependent but this chapter..wow. I just realized that I have been monitoring my environment since I was 3 for signs of threat. How could I have ever been curios about anything? How others felt was of the utmost importance for my well being and safety. Them being ok was how I was ok. I’m grieving not ever getting to know myself. Thank you for this.
This podcast has been an integral part of my recognition of my codependent tendencies, and the catalyst to finding agency, a voice, and eventually understanding who I am and what I want from this life. I’m deeply thankful for the vulnerability it took to share - and keep sharing - the journey as it twists and turns. I’m impressed and thankful for them for sharing their journey.
