Generally, a really good podcast. It feels like it actually gets down to some nitty-gritty things that other podcast don’t talk about. Of course, not every episode is great but generally really good. Just listened to the Fiji episode and it makes me not want to go. Sounds a bit touristy and not super relaxing. Which means that was a great episode! Thank you.

I am just discovering this podcast now and I have been binging nonstop. Even the shows from 10 years ago are still captivating and helpful to listen to. Whether I want to go to a destination or not, every show is engaging. By far the best travel podcast by a mile! And the best podcast host! I sing the theme song nonstop.

I’m working my way through episodes on Italy. This one has Interesting, knowledgeable guests, speaking on a less known region of Italy to tourists, Le Marche. I enjoyed it a lot. Le Marche sounds charming and a wonderful break from the tourist trail. My opinion on the host is less favorable. Chris Christensen is unconscionably condescending and rude to his gracious guests. Throughout the episode he’s fact checking them, correcting them, and literally laughing at his female guest when she mentions certain sites. He’s mocking her. It’s awful. He shows zero cultural sensitivity or even common courtesy. There’s no excuse for the rudeness displayed here. It’s painful to listen to, which is a disservice to your listeners and your guests.

For at least 10 years, I have been listening to amateur traveler whenever I set out on the road. I always travel independently and amateur travelers is just a huge source of suggestions and helpful ideas. As the old ad line goes “don’t leave home without it.”

This episode reduces Paris to the same tired clichés instead of capturing what actually makes the city interesting. It feels superficial, with observations that anyone could make after a quick walk past the Eiffel Tower. Paris has so much depth, character, and everyday charm, but none of that really comes through here. More cringe than compelling.
