The creator clearly knows the genre formulas inside and out. Indeed, sister & narrator Shannon regularly reminds us that we know them too. And then the series proceeds to play with the familiar tropes in clever ways. Thus, it feels less like a satire of romcoms than a love letter that leans in to what makes the genre so enjoyable. It’s a fun, upbeat listen with likable, rich characters!

How can something be really original and follow a formula at the smallest time? Somehow The Romcom Formula manages it. The story, fully aware of the formula, turns it into a clever tool for bringing the protagonists together. Fun characters, fun story, a great listen.

Such a fun and easy listen. The characters pull you right into the story and make it effortless to drop in, like you’re right there with them. It feels immersive from the start. I also love how the narrator guides the story and how each episode includes a recap and character breakdowns. (It reminds me of the narrator in Desperate Housewives.) After just one episode, I more clearly understand how a rom-com works, which is such a cool bonus as a listener. And as someone with a very organized sister while I’m more of the hot mess, I love the sister relationship in this rom-com. It feels relatable and real. I’m already excited to hear more episodes.
