I love this podcast and show! This podcast feeds the nerd in me. I love the historical asides and education, deep dives into the production aspects with your guests, the hosts’ appreciation for the wonderful storytelling. Bravo you two!!

This podcast is a breath of fresh air for learning American History, especially its in-depth excavation of the Black American elite during this time period. However, I offer the co-host Alicia a word of encouragement to be mindful of when she interviews the Black actors and even Dr. Armstrong Dunbar, that she often uses the word “intelligent” to describe them and their characters. This is an example of the unconscious bias that can be projected without awareness in the moment. While the intent may be to compliment them as a means of countering preconceived ideas and beliefs about African Americans; the act is a demonstration of the behavioral and psychological conditioning from systemic racism. The lack of the same description towards the White actors leaves the unspoken assumption that their cognitive ability does not need to be openly acknowledged because the historical context has been that Whiteness is automatically associated with intelligence. In this situation, the question is why is “intelligent” needed as a descriptive for any of these individuals given that to do what they do means they all must be quite intelligent? This is the point of illuminating these stories of the African American Elite during this period in American History; to bring consciousness and awareness to biases so that new beliefs can be formed and demonstrated with awareness.

Love to listen to this after each episode! My only critique is that Alicia mentioned Julianne Moore as the lead in The House of Mirth (2000), but it was actually Gillian Anderson who played Lily Bart. I used to show the film to my students, because Edith Wharton was not on the American Lit curriculum, and I wanted to fit her in. Thank you for all of your expertise and knowledge!!

Alicia and Tom are the PERFECT podcast hosts. Please bring them back for Season 4!!! I loved watching The Guilded Age on HBOMax but I wouldn’t have enjoyed it nearly as much without this official podcast airing weekly after each episode. I learned so much about the history, the characters, the sets and costumes and the actual people whom the characters were based on from this podcast, that I otherwise wouldn’t have known by watching the show alone. I believe this podcast played a big part in making the show so successful. It is my hope that this podcast returns with the same narrators and format with season two of The Guilded Age. Please do not change a thing!

The second season of this podcast is, lamentably, as lackluster as the second season of the show. The podcast hosts sound bored as they read their clearly-scripted episode recaps, their questions for the behind-the-show-scenes guests are quite basic, and the overall podcast comes across as very unfocused, with paid performers going merely going through the motions. Which, sadly, is how the second season of the TV show itself also comes across. Disappointing across the board.

Tablewalkr · Dec 2023

This podcast is of course a delight as usual, but it was really shocking to hear the lies and spin doctoring of an ad for Senator Cornyn from Texas. The ad praised Cornyn and the 47th president for passing the so called Big Beautiful Bill. It would be wise for the podcast producers to pay attention and filter out sponsors who are directly opposed to the underlying warnings of the power and greed of the ultra wealthy featured the Gilded Age.
