On Humans

by Ilari Mäkelä

Where do we come from? How did we get here? And what kinds of creatures are we? On Humans offers conversations with leading scientists, historians, and philosophers, making new research about the human story more accessible to everyone — and more relevant to the big questions about who we are. In addition to regular episodes, the show now includes longer series on some of the greatest arcs in the journey of our species, covering everything from the evolution of apes to the making of the modern economy. https://onhumans.substack.com/about

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

Ilari is the perfect host. I can tell he does his homework before each episode, making him a good counterpart for each guest. He has a keen ability to guide a conversation in a way that reaches the desired destination while still letting his guests roam the territory. I’ve been listening for over a year and continue to be pleasantly surprised when I realize how relevant anthropology can be for non-scholars like myself. I think that’s the magic of this show, and I’m grateful for Ilari and his guests for making their work available to the general public.

cale-for-real · May 2026

Really well researched and thoughtful interviews. Also enjoy his voice and accent, which are quite soothing. Definitely recommend!

bilays · Oct 2025

This show is a new find for me and already feels essential. The interviews are incredibly good, with thoughtful questions that show a deep level of understanding and research on the part of the host. The guests and topics are deeply interesting and thought provoking.

J Hession · Apr 2025

Fantastical and thoughtful. I have found each episode to be profound and thought provoking in its own way. Truly influencing my perspective as how to approach and navigate the vagaries of life.
