Started this podcast this month on my 3rd rewatch of Mad Men and it has quickly become my favorite podcast. The hosts are extremely insightful & don’t give off the pretentious attitude other rewatch podcasts sometimes give. I love that they review each episode with a wide lens theme and then weave in the details scene by scene. Every now and then they go off on a tangent but they’re usually funny and not too long. My only disappointment was realizing they have only gotten to season 5 since 2022. Made me realize they probably won’t finish season 7 until about 2027. I will be here..patiently waiting until the end.
I've been bingeing this pod during my fourth-ever Mad Men rewatch (when it aired, 2018, 2021, and now).Largely I really like this pod - I find it insightful, interesting, and aspirational, which I appreciate. I'm grateful for their effort to cover the literature, art, and history in the show, and to review each episode as a short story guided by specific themes. They unlock thematic patterns that I never took time to notice, and I always love it when someone makes me see something familiar in a new and different way . Hosts are also very funny and whimsical. I like that the conversation is more freewheeling and stays true to overall cohesion of each episode. Most recap podcasts tend to break up their reviews by different character plot lines, which to me spoils cohesion, so I truly appreciate their approach. I don't personally care about the trivia or episode ratings but I know many do and they add texture to recaps. But ... there are some confidently-delivered inaccuracies which needle at me and detract from overall enjoyment... Streetcar Named Desire was written by Tennessee Williams, Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, and halfway through 7 seasons is halfway through season 4, not halfway through 3.Also, host sometimes moderates very well, but other times "corrects" his co-hosts' opinions and perceptions, which is kinda rude as well as counter to the concept of the podcast. Sometimes they are objectively right and he is confidently correcting them with inaccurate information, which is a a little frustrating to listen to . Leaving room for varied perspectives, and taking an extra beat or 2 to fact check anything you're not absolutely certain on, would increase integrity and bring it up to a solid 5 for me. But overall it's smart, funny, and fresh, and I enjoy it very much. Viva Chauncey! 😁🤎🧡
In contrast the the other reviewer here, I really enjoy this podcast. The hosts have a nice banter and although I don’t always agree with their analysis, it’s well thought out and argued. I wish that they would sometimes do a little bit of a deeper analysis (not just why characters do the things they do, but more of the symbolism in the show), but that’s just me!
Tough to have a bad podcast about a great show. But this one has its issues. Two in particular. One is that it’s way too long. Not bad per se; but, despite the length, the whole episode is rarely covered. The second is the presentism employed by the main host. That Don isn’t like today’s man in terms of his this-ism and that-ism is neither relevant nor revelatory. It’s how he compares to men of his day. And in that comparison, not so bad. One can argue that his two best friends are women. The most insightful host is the one who says the least.
This would be a good podcast if the hosts bothered to learn the characters name and do a little research before the show so they’re not bickering over if Maggie Siff was in Scandal before realizing they were talking about another actor. Also we don’t know you guys like that talk about the show more and each other less. I keep listening because there are moments of good discussion but they could be deeper and more insightful if they were longer and not seeming afterthoughts.
