Knowing Sondheim only by his music and lyrics feels like only a paint-by-number painting, after listening to this engaging and illuminating story of Stephen Sondheim the man. Simply a delightful series that adds to the complete painting of the enigmatic composer and lyricist! So many talents and friends created this tribute to one of Broadway's brightest lights.

Two episodes in, I’ve learned that I need to be careful about when I listen to this podcast, because it will make me cry at least once per episode. So lovely to hear these anecdotes directly from Sondheim’s friends and colleagues! And on a more poignant subject, I’m grateful that the creators got audio from these musical theater giants, before we lose them all.

Generous and deeply enjoyable, this podcast is a much needed counterpoint to the dark and ‘glass-half-empty’ recent book by Daniel Ockrent. Sondheim’s acolytes needed, and are so blessed, to have this charming and sincere invitation into the inner sanctum. Loving, indeed.

This podcast is filled with interesting anecdotes. It includes strange and off putting reenactments that would have been better left out completely. It’s definitely worth a listen to any Sondheim die hard’s. However, it’s lacking any real insights. Basically two insights so far - Sondheim enjoyed camp and gossip and he was more down-to-earth than his fans would have assumed.
One major plus is the effort put into sharing music never released before. Just for that it is worth a listen.
