Love is a Crime

by Vanity Fair & Cadence 13

It’s one of the wildest scandals in Hollywood history: In 1951, major Hollywood producer Walter Wanger (Jon Hamm) went to prison for shooting an agent who he suspected was having an affair with Joan Bennett (Zooey Deschanel), Wanger’s actress wife. When the dust settled, Wanger was accepted back into Hollywood’s inner circle with open arms, while a puritan panic virtually ended Bennett’s career in movies and her family would never be the same. How did Joan — the youngest member of one of America’s most famous acting families, and one of the key femme fatales of 1940s film noir — end up a real-life fallen woman, paying a public price for her husband’s crimes? In this limited podcast series, Joan and Walter’s granddaughter/filmmaker Vanessa Hope, and film historian/podcaster Karina Longworth (You Must Remember This), tell the untold story of the Bennett/Wanger romance and professional partnership — a film noir played out in real life.

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

Only one episode in and I’m hooked! Definitely more of the high standard kind of podcast that Karina Longworth has spoiled us with in her own podcast “You Must Remember This.” The dramatizations are fun and different. Also appreciate Vanessa Hope’s personal point of view on the story. The co-hosts are very well-paired. Only low point— Zooey Deschanel is kind of meh.

This is absolutely fascinating! I have loved Joan Bennett since I was a kid who watched “Dark Shadows”. Over the years I have read and tried to find any and all info on her. This series is very well researched, with personal family touches! It’s excellent!!!! Can’t wait for the next episode!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations Vanessa Hope!

This podcast started out a bit slow but picks up pace by episode 3. I saw Bennett years ago in Scarlet Street and could never forget her. Now I’m hooked on this fascinating podcast and eagerly await the next episode.

I was expecting to love this but frankly it’s heavy on the social commentary which drags the story down. Anyone who has ever read anything about old Hollywood is already very familiar with the sexist attitudes of that era and does not need a lecture about how backwards the thinking was then. They especially do not need to be told this over and over and over ad nauseam. We get it. The past was another country. Move on with the show.

It is difficult to follow this podcast that is written like a movie script rather than a spoken narrative. The narrator makes awkward pauses and does not pronounce names correctly. I realize it’s supposed to be a “period” piece, but the many of the actors’ voices are too over the top. We could do without the annoying background music too. Sound levels need correcting.

PodWalker50 · Sep 2021

I was hooked in the beginning. The story and history is fascinating. However, the main narrator’s speech and more so annunciation is quite irritating. The overemphasissssss of words is too much. I can’t.
