The subjects are well researched and often horrifying in its content, but the hosts provide enough levity to make the horror go down easy.

A funny and informative podcast that cuts through the sanitizing, the hero worship, and all the other bull to get to the messy, ambiguous, and incompetent truth of military history. Along the way you get all sorts of chaotic divergences about energy drinks, working out, and European living so things are never dull. Well worth a listen.

I have always been a history nerd, but military history had never really held my interest. This show actually made me enjoy military history and made it easier to understand. Tom cracks me up. Nate’s educational digressions are really interesting… when they don’t go entirely off the rails lol. I do miss Liam’s passionate pessimism and bullying of Joe. Joe is a great writer and researcher, and I enjoy his analysis and his jokes— even the bad ones haha.

It’s a bummer that for the last couple years, this show’s become more and more about filling time with tangents and less about telling historical stories of dumb and/or horrifying military actions. That said, the older stuff with Liam and Nick still holds up. It’s more about the topic of the day, and the jokes are about what they’re talking about too, so that’s nice

Listened since 2022, Patreon subbed for awhile. I agree with the other review, Tom and Nate were the least talented guest stars, now both are co-hosts. They want to turn it into a show about 80s-2008 rock history, which isn’t why people tuned in. Their jokes are long digressions rather than supportive to the narrative. I find after a year of them being permanent fixtures I just no longer enjoy listening.
