I’ve watched your show and listened online for a while. I’m troubled by you not believing that back people ( African students) had issues getting out of Ukraine due to their skin color, and for you a black woman with an international platform to tell black folks to stay put is highly irresponsible. And to ask the black Ukrainian on your show tonight (yes still watching you) equally so. I’m not sure why it’s so hard for you (or your production team) to understand that racism takes no days off! You highlighted the way other journalists are phrasing them as smart, Christian displaced persons (and not refugees, which is inherently racist) but seemingly you refuse to truthfully explore what HAS happened to folk that look like you, come on…

Hands down one of my favorite podcasts. I love saving them for the weekend and listening Drake style - Baaaaack to Baaaaaack. It’s the intellectual rigor, authenticity, and unapologetic for the culture approach that keeps me tuning in. Please bring the podcast back immediately. 💞

Dear Ms. Reid,
I love your show, and n the last two days—on Rachel Maddow’s special coverage of the first day of testimony in the Trump scene to manipulate the flow of information and fraudulently win the 2016 election, and your own coverage last night of organized student resistance to ongoing US investment in and support for Netanyahu’s ongoing policy of genocide aganst the people of Gaza, I felt especially heartened by your perspectives, which hit a particular calm, reasoned, yet uncompromising note that really gave me hope.
Thank you for your intellectual brilliance, political insight, and above all for your humanity.
Sincerely Margot Backus, Houston TX

The very idea of book banning hurts me to my core. However, just like movies have ratings, I don’t see a reason not to limit access to books that are graphic in nature. I think a parent should have the right to monitor what their children read. Banning books is extreme, but monitoring what a child reads and limiting access to topics beyond their level of understanding is reasonable.

If a parent believes that a book with a particularly sensitive topic is a great Segway to a conversation with their child about an experience they’ve had, then that book can easily be obtained on Amazon or a local bookstore. It doesn’t need to be in the library of an elementary school. And, just because a book is considered a classic doesn’t necessarily make it appropriate for every child at any age. Some books will be better understood when children are older. That’s common sense.

I consider myself a liberal, a huge fan of the most and best education anyone can have, and a person who is completely opposed to banning any book. But some topics and some books are better left to children of a certain age. And, and as many have said, leave it to the parents to decide. If you know your child, you should know what their capable of understanding. And, having this take place in the privacy of that child’s home also seems like a reasonable choice.

With the endless battles about education, and its disappointing results these days, I would appreciate more conversations about how to make the most of the short amount of time we have to get our kids truly educated while loving to learn…about EVERYTHING… as their age and maturity permit. A well-educated society makes better choices.

In closing, I was also disappointed with the way you conducted your interview. You were rude and badgering. I believe that you are better than that. A person can still be polite and respectful even when a person doesn’t agree with or like the other.

Joy gets 5 stars. The two stars are for whoever is in charge of putting the show content into podcast format, and for a few reasons. One...why is it that after so many listener complaints you STILL haven’t managed to fix the commercial interruptions? At this point it’s laughable. Two...as I send this review on a Thursday evening, not a single show from the week has been uploaded. DO BETTER
