New Sounds is unlike any radio show you've ever heard: a whirlwind tour of new and unusual music from all corners of the globe. New Sounds combs recent recordings for one of the most informative and compelling hours on radio, and aims to make the world smaller. For over 25 years, host John Schaefer has been finding the melody in the rainforest and the rhythm in an orchestra of tin cans. Defying rigid categorization and genre pigeonholing, New Sounds offers new ways to hear the ancient language of song. With guest musicians from David Byrne to Meredith Monk to Ravi Shankar to Philip Glass to Christopher O'Riley to Bang On A Can, Schaefer presents performances (both in-studio and from the New Sounds Live concert series) and premieres new works from the classic and operatic to folk and jazz, and anything else in between. Each show has a theme, ranging from post-rock to klezmer to African blues to minimalism. The variety of cultures and styles explored is boundless. Music you may not have known existed and now can't live without.

I have been listening to this program since it started . Thirty plus years. John has enlightened me with this music journey. For all of you who are saying this podcast has changed and what’s up ? , you should be listening on WYNC or on NewSounds.org. You can listen daily. Seven days a week and the archives of all programs are available. You can even hear some concerts . It doesn’t get better than this if love music!
John gives us many gifts in each episode using his ‘musical superpowers’. When I see a new show come up rarely do I say “oh, this show will be amazing.” But almost always after a listen I feel as if I am a more educated listener, and indeed realize that the show was amazing. We’re all so lucky to have New Sounds in our lives!!!
This show introduces me to complex, amazing, and beautiful music from around the world that I would never otherwise be exposed to. I love it. It makes my life more wonderful. Thank you, John Schaefer.
I have learned more about music, geography, cultures from all over the from listening to John Schaefer than I did in four years of college. His knowledge of music, muscians is freakily encyclopedic. He keeps me up way too late because his choice of themes, selections is just too damned interesting! MORE podcasts, pulleezze!
