Myths and Legends

by Jason Weiser, Carissa Weiser, Nextpod

Jason Weiser and Carissa Weiser tell stories from myths, legends, and folklore that have shaped cultures throughout history. Some, like the stories of Aladdin, King Arthur, and Hercules are stories you think you know, but with surprising origins. Others are stories you might not have heard, but really should. All the stories are sourced from world folklore, but retold for modern ears. These are stories of wizards, knights, Vikings, dragons, princesses, and kings from the time when the world beyond the map was a dangerous and wonderful place.

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

Mythology is something that interests me but I always have a hard time reading it and fully understanding it. These podcasts have made it super easy to get my fix and the narration is super clear which is an added bonus.

this is my fav podcast I listen to it all the time! it’s literally my therapy it always makes me feel better once i listen. also i think it’s very impressive how you can make a creepy, disturbing, or gory story sound really funny and light. this podcast has raised my standards so high i try to find another podcast to listen to in between episodes but i always return here. ive listened to literally episode and i have the membership and i think its worth it!!! im always so excited when i see theres a new episode out!! can u please do another episode where you put two real myths and a fake one that you made up and we had to guess which one is fake ( Untitled Goose Episode) because it was really fun!

I LOVE this podcast, it’s amazing for doing work or falling asleep. The narrators voice is very calm but still very expressive. If you don’t like commentary then this might not be for you but I appreciate a little intervention sometimes whether it’s for context, a joke or any other reason I feel like it doesn't take away from the story. I think the story’s are well told and interesting. Same as many other people that listen to this podcast, my favorite episodes are the “Monkey king” ones and if you are just starting to listen those are good ones to start with, they are comedic but still have interesting conflict that adds the depth to the story. The episodes are mostly family friendly but if it’s not there is always a content warning, which is always really appreciated. But anyway would definitely recommend. Happy listening!! 😄

Hands down. I would even go as far to say best storytelling podcast. I have my degree in mythology and Jason just gets it. Such a refreshing show. (Monkey King episodes are my favorite!)

Absolutely avoid this podcast if you are interested in learning/refreshing knowledge of Slavic mythology. The host declares every Slavic myth is ruzzian (it’s literally in the topic rundown) and ignores the actual reality of the word SLAVIC, meaning the expanse of Czechia, Poland, Ukraine, and the Baltic countries. It’s disgraceful that he can claim, with Google being free and many books having been translated into English from Slavic languages, available in libraries around the United States, that ruzzia is the “owner” of these myths and legends. It is 2026, sir, and even at the time you began the podcast, many books were written and translated, and the information was readily accessible to you. I do not recommend this podcast to anyone who is seeking information on mythology or legends on anything, to be frank, because if he is so negligent as to consider every Slavic myth ruzzian, how wrong is he about the facts regarding other countries’ myths and legends? You should be ashamed of yourself.

This podcast is incredible, covering a wide range of topics from Journey to the West to Japanese folklore and the Odyssey. I’ve been a loyal listener since 2020 and recently upgraded to the subscribers edition in 2022. It was definitely worth it, although I’m not fully enjoying it right now because the subscribers edition episodes are missing, and the ads are currently present in the regular episodes. Whether you’re looking for an entertaining podcast for a long car drive, to help you fall asleep, or to wake you up in the morning, this is the podcast for you. However, the type of episodes you choose to listen to will greatly influence your enjoyment. For instance, the Journey to the West (Monkey King episodes) are probably the most comedic of any episode type. I recommend starting with episode 148A for the monkeys’ origin story. The audio quality is quite poor in the initial few episodes but improves significantly around episode 80. I hope this review has positively impacted readers’ perspectives of the podcast and provided an opportunity to inform Jason that his member episodes are not working, even though it’s not his fault.
