I put off writing a review because I didn’t want to be negative over something people work hard on but I care too much about HMP not to say something. I used to get so excited when I’d see a new Jay of the Dead podcast pop up, and that goes for both HMP and New Horror Movies. But it got to a point where I just stopped listening because I just don’t like the new format. 10 hosts is way too many. The best form of the podcast is 2/3 hosts with guests sprinkled in. I hadn’t listened to an episode in probably over a year. When I saw there was a new episode and it was only going to have the core original podcasters, I got so excited I listened immediately. I’m also sure that having 10 hosts is partly the reason the episodes take so long to come out. But I missed hearing Jay’s voice so much that I just keep listening to old episodes of HMP. I hope you’ll take these thoughts into consideration. Also, it’s a shame Jay is condoning his son’s blatant use of AI for his channel. There’s nothing cool about it. Please reconsider using any form of ai and create something cool yourself.
This show truly is the gold standard of horror podcasting. So much variety of backgrounds and different perspectives and nuanced discussions on all kinds of horror films. The problem is, the upload schedule and consistency has gotten significantly worse over the years. So many “new horror movies” release and we never get to hear reviews about them. New mini-series begin but never get finished. Year-end lists don’t see the light of day until years later. Since the show started there have been a number of new hosts added, which has probably contributed to slowing the show down significantly. I love this show but it has been disappointing watching it slowly go into decline as time has gone on. Hopefully they can figure things out
Jay of the Dead is a legend in the horror podcasting world. His New Horror Movies show brings together a team of “horror Avengers,” each of whom brings their own unique perspective and knowledge. As the title implies, they focus on new theatrical and VOD/streaming releases. But they also look at older films in segments such as GregaMortis’ Monsters on the Mantle, a look at sci-fi/horror from the 50s and 60s, and Dr. Walking Dead’s Dead Man Still Walking exploration of zombie films throughout history. They delve into themes and trends, and even aspects of horror fandom such as their recent dive into the physical media vs. streaming debate and movie collecting. A very comprehensive horror show with something for virtually any horror fan, from the casual to the analytical.
This podcast claims to be the gold standard of horror movies podcasts, and no one can argue with that. The podcast is led by some of the most experienced horror movies podcasters; each of whom have their own specialty segments. I love each segment and I love hearing all of these podcasting legends interact with each other and provide all of their different opinions and perspectives. I’ve heard some of the most thoughtful movie reviews I’ve ever heard on this podcast and, believe me, I listen to A TON of horror movie podcasts. Every time an episode drops, I feel so much excitement knowing I’m about to have 7+ hours worth of discussions revolving around my favorite subject by some of the absolute best in the business. If you’re a horror movie fan, this podcast is an absolute must. 10/10
