Whether you like old cameras or not, whether you like photography or not, Jeff and Gabe are just a joy to listen to. Their passion about the topic, their humor, their intelligence and their obvious joy in the people they interact with make this a wonderful podcast to listen to. However, if you love old cameras or photography, this is a must listen! Tons of insightful information about specific camera and lenses, the advantages and disadvantages of each and why you might want to try some of them even in spite of or because of their particular shortcomings. Make sure you listen to all of the episodes in order. Hearing the evolution of their photographic journeys, the hilarious juxtaposition of some of their strident convictions from early shows to their current interests and the integration of their personal lives with their photography is joyous.
If you’re searching for podcasts about cameras there’s a decent likelihood that you’re a bit of a nerd. Assuming that you’re reading this review, then you are a nerd, and you’ll most likely enjoy this podcast for the information AND entertainment value. If you’re looking for straight entertainment you might want to look elsewhere. One thing that separates this podcast from other very lovely camera-related podcasts is that Jeff and Gabe, as writers, understand how to tell a story and how to keep things brief. Which is not to say that sometimes Jeff won’t go on an overly-long diatribe about the correct pronunciation of a word or the rarity of a particular Alpa, but all in all they keep it short and don’t extrapolate unneccessarily. But even so, they’re delightful to listen to and very fun people. Maybe it’s just my luck, but often when I run into camera nerds they tend to be elitist or put-off if you try and chat with them. Jeff and Gabe are none of the sort; I get the impression they’d be happy to chat with you if you bumped into them on the street. (You’d likely have to be in Milan to bump into Jeff or at fashion week to bump into Gabe, but I digress.) Actually, that makes me think of a word of caution; your podcast hosts are not blue-collar “Joes,” as such do not fall for their schemes to get you to buy every camera they do; you’ll be in the poorhouse if you do. But if you do, at least you’ll have good cameras to document your stay.
This is my goto morning walk podcast, learning more about photography and interesting discussion on a variety of subject matters.
Very fun, engaging conversationalists talking about what could otherwise be a very dry subject. And it’s like therapy, listening to people who share my obsession with classic cameras.
