BETH'S DEAD

Loved “Beth’s Dead”. Originally listened a year ago, then on a roadtrip I wanted my husband to hear it. To my surprise, I inadvertently didn’t finish it the first time around. Realizing now that I had missed the last 6 episodes, not realizing the outcome. Definitely better when you finish the story. Love the “Nobody’s Listening, right?”podcast. Elizabeth and Andy bring so much laughter to my daily 25 minute commute.

Bingeing this podcast felt like sitting around with friends as they caught me up on some completely crazy happenings in their lives (how parasocial! lol). Throughout the episodes, I laughed, my heart raced, and my jaw dropped. I really enjoyed the structure of the series, from the documentary-style review of all the emails, forum posts, and clips, to the inclusion of the expert and PI, to the giddy risky-text energy of getting in contact with the culprit. I felt like I was in on the investigation with the group and was fascinated by the turn it took. I was unfamiliar with Elizabeth, Andy, and Monica until heard about this podcast via Elizabeth’s guest appearance on The Deep Dive with June Diane Raphael and Jessica St. Clair. I found the trio to be a great team and I enjoyed the varied perspectives they brought to their reflections on these events. Thanks for sharing!

This podcast was quite enjoyable to listen to. The situation was a serious one but how the information was shared and discussed really made it feel relatable and human. The ending caught me by surprise but in the best way possible. It just displays the complexity of being human and one of the ways it could play out in a digital age.

First episode is long and slow but hold on, it all makes sense in the last few minutes then you will be hooked. I don’t usually listen to podcasts like this, a British podcast I listen to (Luanna the Podcast) recommended if you like a light hearted funny and relatable podcast*** - anyway the producer recommended this pod so I listened and it captivated me… so many twists and turns.

The entire time, they were ready to attack the catfisher (rightfully so), but it seemed like as soon as he professed his hatred for Trump, all was forgiven. Suddenly they were besties wanting to hug him. The tone completely changed. Had they found out on the Zoom call that he was right-leaning, they would have continued the narrative that he was a monster. Also, I believe his tirades as Frank, posting things to make conservatives look horrible, were meant to further his agenda of making them look bad. It’s adjacent to when someone claims a racial crime happened against them, only for it to come out that the whole thing was faked to push a narrative. And conveniently, that part got glossed right over. Flip the scenario, a right-leaning person posing as a liberal and posting awful things to smear the left, and you know they would have been all over it. For the record, I’m not a Republican or a Democrat. It doesn’t matter where you stand politically, just be consistent and call out bad behavior equally. That’s all I’m asking for. The hypocrisy is what I can’t stand.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

My fatal flaw is that I can’t give up on a story line. I will watch the most horrendous series just to get closure after starting it. That said, finishing this podcast took all of my strength. In fact, I didn’t listen to the final episodes after the “reveal”. I think this had the makings of an interesting story, but the total lack of structure and artistic presentation of information made it painful to endure. I began listening bc someone on IG rated this podcast 10000/10, and now I’m wondering if that person also loves root canals.
