What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

The host has a lovely voice, very engaging! She covers some of my favorite topics: the gory, less talked about facts of our existence. She presents the topic with context so the listener isn’t confused. I love her humor, and minimal but appropriate sound effects! I appreciate she covers a semi-broad spectrum of topics, from murder to disasters to cannibalism! One of my absolute favorite podcasts!

First off, I am a fan of this show, and I listen to every episode! The content and subject matter is very compelling, and the creepy stories are right up my alley in terms of the type of things that I love learning about. There is only one problem that consistently occurs in almost every episode: the host Kelli tends to really over-simplify the terminology and concepts to an almost excruciating degree. Kelli, you do a great job researching and explaining these stories, but we really do not need to be told that “flammable”means something that can catch fire. This is one example out of many. The explanations almost seem geared toward an elementary school audience. An audience that is mature enough for the cannibalism subject matter is likely fully aware of the meaning of every term you use in these episodes. It becomes tedious having such minutiae explained over and over. I am sorry if this sounds harsh, but it feels insulting to the intelligence of your audience. I really enjoy the stories overall, and want to keep listening!! But please, give your listeners the benefit of the doubt and don’t worry so much about explaining every little scientific term or detail, as if we have never heard anything but the most basic of words before. I promise you that most of us are well within our ability to understand complicated content. Thank you for your hard work and you do a great job with everything otherwise!! I am excited to hear the creepy tales to come!

I’ve listened to quite a few history podcasts and in my experience the author either has “it” or they don’t. By “it” I mean a combination of good writing and good narration. Mike Duncan and Kevin Stroud are two Hall of Fame examples. Well, Kelli Beard has it. I will definitely be subscribing and am eager to hear more episodes. However, I do find the title of the podcast a little strange, since I’m not sure I would call the topics “unpopular”.

I found this podcast during one of our 6 hour drives to visit family over Christmas. My husband and I really liked it - the content is interesting, Kelli’s voice and storytelling are captivating and it’s clean. There wasn’t a single episode that our 12 year old daughter couldn’t listen to, something I struggle with when trying to find podcasts for family car rides. It made our drive go by so fast! We listened to every episode and really hope there are more to come!!
