The Big Dig

by GBH News

There is a cynicism that hangs over the topic of American infrastructure – whether it’s high-speed rail or off-shore wind – it feels like this country can’t build big things anymore. No one project embodies that cynicism quite like what Bostonians call ‘The Big Dig.’ Infamous for its ever-increasing price tag, this massive highway tunneling effort was once ridiculed as the Big Mess, the Big Hole, the Big Pig, the Big Lie. But now, decades later the story looks more complicated. So how did the narrative around this project go so horribly wrong? And what lessons can it offer for the ambitious projects of today? The nine episode series is produced by GBH News in partnership with PRX.

What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

This series was incredible! I work for an engineering firm and this show provided me with a glimpse into the business of our work. We also lived in the Boston area during the construction of the Big Dig so I saw firsthand what was going on but never fully understood the scope of the work. This series filled me in!

Librarian to KM · Sep 2025

One of the best produced podcast series ever. The writing, the historical audio clips, the interviews, the host, the editing - and the story. I look forward to more!

A great listen - learned a lot about this massive infrastructure project in Boston. Well done GBH team!

BK tgt fan · Aug 2025

As someone who worked in the MassHighway Chief Engineer’s office during the early 90’s, I loved the trip down memory lane as I knew most of the players. You did a fantastic job - showing everyone a lot of moving parts (good and bad) and not pointing fingers. It was simply “here’s the story”. I loved that about this podcast.
