A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

I've really been enjoying their analysis and personal stories about these films (and literally any mention at all of SMG), and they're also funny and charming. Can't wait to eventually hear their thoughts on Sinners, Doctor Sleep (give me all the Flanagan all the time!), and Midsommar 🫣

I love this podcast! We recently took their rec on Strange Darling and went in blind - what an amazing film I might never have heard about otherwise. My request is a review of Absentia, the only Mike Flanagan I haven't seen yet.

Generally speaking, I am a huge wimp when it comes to horror movies. That Was Pretty Scary has made me find a new found love of all things scary! FPJ and JLB summarize each movie from an artful perspective. I love getting insight on how a director might think when setting a scene for a film. If I’ve never seen the movie reviewed, I instantly want to watch it and those I have seen, get a rewatch! I can’t wait for the start of season 3, hopefully they will review some of my A24 favorites like Midsommar or Hereditary.

My son and I listen to your That Was Pretty Scary podcast every Wednesday after his return from school. It has been so nostalgic as it feels like the older generation of listening to a story via radio waves. We have made so many memories sharing your enthusiasm for horror films. It’s been a much needed break from the screen time and we love the audio critical analysis and informative insight to the film industry. My favorite is the action sequence descriptions from Freddie and the banter back from the quit wit of Jon Lee Brody. That brings so much joy and laughter to the story. Sometimes it’s better than the movie (just sayin’ with much love and respect). The experience brings me back to listening to audio thrillers on cassette tape like “Suspense” with my Grandpa Joe. It makes the imagination pop! I too am a 80’s -90’s kid, so I can relate to so much that Freddie shares and I even grew up watching him and Sarah Michelle as I was their age. My two college aged girls are forever Buffy fans! Me I was a “I know what you did” fan even read the book and had the soundtrack, lol, not kidding! Huge Scream fan, too, and my daughter is named Sidney. She loves the backstory too. Sidney Prescott was a powerful character. As a daughter of a big movie family, I was raised with movie trivia by our younger uncle (more like a brother) who was a mega horror fan. RIP Uncle Dewayne. He had us watching the B stuff, too! he’d await patiently for from Aardvark video. When you share your personal anecdotes of going to the movie store or sleepover it brings me back to mine as well. Another opportunity to bond with my son about those experiences that were buried by the mundane. There have been so many hidden gems of films I found I missed like Chopping Mall and somehow Poltergeist (I don’t know how) and was able to make fun memories with these movie nights with the family. We can also bring some interesting insider knowledge after listening to the excellent recap. I know it’s the longest review ever but you have something here! I have shared your podcast with so many people and can’t wait for another season! Thank you to all who create this podcast for us to enjoy! Appreciate you!
