Matt is an excellent interviewer. I think the Andrew Klavan episodes are great example of his skills: he is empathetic, fun, humble, knows how to respectfully ask touchy questions, willing to speak with people his audience doesn’t want him to. My one criticism since the DW merge: they won’t let his interviews go as long as they used to. One interview in particular, he said something like, “They need us to wrap up.” Like, what??? “They”?? There wasn’t a “they” before—Matt, his guest, and Thursday would just plough on for five hours. Now some “they” is saying “2.5 hours MAX.” Come onnnn—Matt’s an endurance podcaster. We, his audience, are endurance listeners. We want to know what kind of dental floss Bertrand Russell prefers. If the interviews aren’t going long enough to reach that point, then they’re just too short.

The only reason I gave four stars is that I’m cautious but your guests have made me see truths that I didn’t understand before. I’ve always questioned and wanted answers since early Catholic days in grade school. The people I asked didn’t have answers so I was shamed. Good bye Catholic Church! I’ve been attending again but still feel confused. I’ve been praying a lot and talking with God. I believe your podcast came onto my radar for a reason. Thank you! Thank you Jesus! I’m actually giddy about going to daily mass today! The feeling is similar to wanting to see ‘that boy in math class’ who you REALLY like. This is really weird and amazing for an older skeptical woman- I love it! Thanks for the variety of guests who seem to be answering the questions I have at just the right moment.

I’ve recently been listening to the Pints With Aquinas podcast. I discovered it after a friend sent me a link about the Shroud of Turin. I was fascinated, started searching for more content, and eventually found Matt’s episode on the topic. If I remember correctly, it was around three hours long, and honestly one of the best podcast formats I’ve ever listened to. After that, I went all the way back to Episode 1 and I’m now on Episode 34. I have no idea how many episodes are left, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to take me a very long time to catch up. What I appreciate most is that the show has exposed me to the writings of Thomas Aquinas in a way I never could have consumed on my own. The podcast makes deep theology approachable without watering it down. God love you, Matt, for the show and for the integrity with which you present the material.

This show has so much promise but Matt has a maddening habit of repeatedly, back to back interrupting guests when they are trying to answer his questions or talk about their expertise. It turns this into more of a one man monologue in the company of a guest than a long form podcast with interesting guest perspective. Some episodes he does better than others.

I’ve followed him for a long time, but ever since he has gotten to that political network he seems so bent on an agenda. Even if the agenda agrees with my views, it cheapens the message. It becomes so clear when he’s with someone theologically focused, he used to have it, I pray he gets back to it.
