I like most of the content on this show. However, they dedicate too much time to following women’s hockey for a show that markets itself as being about the NHL. For example, in the playoff preview show, they spent about 20 minutes talking about women’s hockey but only 9 minutes discussing the first round matchups. I’m all for growing the sport and routinely dropping news about women’s hockey, but the repeated segments dedicated to it take up an excessive percentage of show time and is a disingenuous volume of content given how the show markets itself as being “Locked on NHL”. That’s the reason for the 3 stars. I will keep listening because I do like the NHL content, but please know I am skipping through these long segments on women’s hockey. I’m sure there are podcasts out there for those interested in a deep dive into women’s hockey.

this is a very interesting, enjoyable, and helpful podcast. I am giving it five stars for that, but I am horrified at Gill Martin’s response to hiring Joel Quenneville and very very pleased to hear Rachel Donner explain to him that winning a Stanley Cup does not obviate or in any way balance out, allowing or ignoring sexual abuse on his staff. Gill needs to sit down and think about that.

The national podcasters do a great job of covering NHL issues and topics as a whole. They often also talk about individual teams and how they are doing. Although they only talk about teams they like. For example their coverage of the winter classic was only discussing the Minnesota wilds loss and zero coverage of the St. Louis Blues victory. And their power rankings are quite biased as well only placing teams they particularly like in top 10 slots as opposed to looking at the numbers and stats to decide power rankings. All in all they are very professional and there aren’t really any better NHL coverage posdcasts so give them a listen but I can’t give it 5 stars.

In general Locked on NHL is a decent show but the Game Night sub show, specifically during the ‘25 playoffs has been annoying to the point I probably won’t listen anymore. The host from the west is fine. He’s professional and knowledgeable. But the guy from the east seems to go by the mantra that loud and animated equates to knowledgeable. And he just gets louder and more animated the less substance he has to add to the episode. You even get the sense that his cohost starts to get annoyed with him. It’s unfortunate because the show is a good way to get caught up on the games
I miss. For now I’ll have to go back to reading the game recaps online.
