As a wannabe game developer, I often search the web for game design videos, series and podcasts. I often stumble into content that’s either too shallow or is delivered in a convoluted, navel-gazy fashion. That’s not the case for DGC. I’ve been a listener for almost a decade now and Brett and Tim never fail to deliver valuable insights in an accessible and respectful way. These guys know what they’re doing and we are lucky that they are willing to share their knowledge with us.
I’ve been following the show for years and can’t recommend it more highly. The show covers a variety of classic games over many genres, and playing along with the show is incredibly rewarding when the hosts dig into what works for the game and why. Even if you aren’t playing along, you will be hooked by Brett and Tim’s analysis and banter, backed by decades of real game developer industry experience.
I just found this show and have binged it for about ten episodes straight. Love the industry insider knowledge and insights into how my favorites from childhood might have been envisioned and executed. The slow and thoughtful play-through of Ocarina of Time was fantastic. I hope some day they will get to Majoras Mask. Keep up the great work, and thanks for making my commutes so interesting.
DGC is an underrated gem. If the only thing the show had to offer was two veteran game designers talking about classic games and what makes them impactful, it would be worth subscribing. But that’s not all. The guests they get on the show are all incredible too, including some super-high profile folks in the industry. If you’ve ever wanted to by a fly on the wall while talented game developers talk shop with one another, this is the podcast for you.
