AWO are the real ones with a deep, insightful and often quite funny dive into the anime space. Especially recommended for long time “oldtaku”, the lifers who have been watching anime and reading manga since the ‘90s or earlier. While they’re not specifically a nostalgia podcast, the Anime World Order crew’s tastes do hew older. But that doesn’t stop them from also taking on current shows and trends in the medium. I’ve been listening since 2006 or ‘07 and I always get something out of every episode.
One of the first podcasts in the anime space, and arguably one of the most important shows out there if you’re interested in the history of the medium and the fandom. The hosts take an in depth look at multiple shows and offer a fount of information about the state of the industry in the context of whatever they’re covering - including conventions, fanzines, fan clubs etc. Fascinating to see how attitudes have changed through the decades, and yet the diligence in maintaining the history of anime in the USA is awe inspiring. I’ve learned so much over the decades and continue to find new corners to dive into. Important to note: if you start from episode 1, remember the context of when that stuff was coming out. Like most 20 something’s ( especially in 2006) some jokes or asides may be outdated, but every single one of hosts has matured throughout the years and have a more nuanced look at things and are pleasant to interact with.
Top reviews about anime classics, hidden gems and occasionally mainstream. Very knowledgeable hosts with much experience. Aside from the OG ANNCast with Zac and Justin, this is the only podcast that I’ve re-listened to episodes multiple times over the years (and I listen to a lot of podcasts). I’ve listened to the entire catalog at least 3 times through.
Another long-time listener (think 2009 or so) dropping in to say that this is my go-to anime podcast. Thoughtful analysis, dumb humor, but in a smart way, and true anime aficionados to a host. Coming out on a monthly basis, each episode is a treat and pops to the top of my listen list as soon as I see it. I’ve even gone back and listened to old episodes and they hold up. If you’ll notice, nearly all newer negative reviews mention politics. Yes, these hosts do spout their opinion on politics but you can agree or disagree and you should feel comfortable enough in your opinion to not be so bothered by someone else’s. I’d much rather hear hosts be themselves and relate with each other for a couple of minutes on something that’s effecting their lives and mindsets, than to get a purposefully sanitized show that is crafted just so, in order to avoid alienating even a single listener. Check it out for yourself and if the minute of political talk truly makes you drop your biscotti in your tea, you CAN just walk away.
I've been listening to these guys since 2006, and even wrote a review for them back in 2007. The show has fallen far indeed. They can't seem to keep their mouths shut about politics in this ANIME podcast. In the latest episode #204, it only took them 90 seconds into the episode to take stabs at Trump. I personally can't stand Trump, but that's not the point. This is an ANIME podcast. And you guys were one of the first ANIME podcasts. You simply must do better. You've been better. You can do so again. Or not, it's your choice.
